Hi there! I'm Jaa!

About Jaa

Hi there! Welcome to Hellojaa.com! My name is Jaa and I work full-time as a research scientist! :)

I'm not very good at writing about myself so I'm going to make this short and sweet! Well, I love makeup, writing, webdesign, and photography, so having a beauty blog just makes total sense! Everything I know about makeup is self-taught and thus, my reviews usually come from a perspective of an everyday user. Occasionally I will include blogging and photography tips in my posts but the main purpose of the blog will mostly be about beauty product reviews.

Side note about my photos

Every single product photo you see on Hellojaa.com was taken and processed by me (except photos on Wish List and On My Radar posts where I always credit the sources at the bottom). Some of them may look like official photos but they are not. You are allowed to use my photos and content of the blog on your site as long as you provide a link back to Hellojaa.com (more on this subject here).

How to switch language

Hellojaa.com is a bilingual blog offering content in English and Thai languages. You can switch between the two languages at any time by clicking on the language switcher on the top menu strip or above the content of each page.

Well, I'm glad you stopped by! Please have a look around and visit again soon! :)

    Hi Jaa,
Love your new photo. You look stunning. What highlighter did you use in that picture?

Hi Jaa, I am a freelance makeup artist and currently work for Bobbi Brown. I saw your wonderful post about Anniversary. Which location do you shop? we’d love to meet you.

Hi! I was wondering what lens do you use for your macro shots? I recently bought a macro lens (canon 100mm f/2.8 macro USM) but I can’t seem to get the photos to turn out quite right. What does your set-up look like?

    • Jaa says:

Hi Sheila! What do you mean when you said “not quite right”? Is it the lighting that you are not happy with? Or the sharpness of the photos? Or… ? If you give me more details I might be able to suggest something. As for the setup, I use a homemade lightbox similar to this: http://www.wikihow.com/Create-an-Inexpensive-Photography-Lightbox. Hope this helps!

Oh, and about the lens, I also use a Canon 100mm macro but mine is an “IS USM” (Image Stabilization) version. :)

Hi Jaa, thanks for your quick response! I have lots of natural light in my house and there is this stone countertop that I use to take photos. Basically my set-up is just a beige counter with natural light. What I meant by not quite right is maybe just that I don’t use a tripod for my photos, it doesn’t focus properly on the subject. Like for my swatch photos, I have swatches on my left arm and the camera in my right hand, so there’s not enough distance for the lens to focus on the swatch.

Do you use the Canon 100mm Macro for your swatch and product photos, or just swatch photos, or neither? Thanks so much for your help! I contemplated returning the lens but I really like how the photos are turning out if I can manage to get it to focus properly, so I want to keep trying.

I use my macro lens for both swatching and taking product photos. From my experience, I find that with a macro lens, you need a lot of light and a tripod because even the slightest movement can result in motion blur. It also helps to press the shutter with a remote or set a timer because by pressing the shutter button with your finger, it’s enough to induce camera shake. You want everything to be as still as possible. You have already invested in the lens, it only makes sense to spend a little more to get a tripod and/or remote so that your photos will come out as sharp as possible. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions! :)

    Hello Jaa,

(See what I did there… hehe) I just discovered your blog and I have no idea how I haven’t stumbled on on this beautiful website before! I love your posts and your photos are amazing. I really hope I could take nice pictures like that one day :) Keep doing what you’re doing!

    • Jaa says:

Hey Shayna! Aww thanks so much for your kind comment! It totally made my day! :D It took me a while to get comfortable with camera and actually know what I’m doing. Haha. I’m still learning new things everyday. Practicing and experimenting are keys I find! :)
