Review & Usage

Hourglass Ambient Powder Brush is a short-handled, wide brush designed to be used with the Ambient Lighting Powder. Unlike other Hourglass brushes, this one has a plastic handle that is lightweight and has a flattened ferrule. The short handle does not feel awkward at all. In fact, it is surprisingly pretty comfortable to hold and give you lots of control (where and how much to apply). The synthetic Taklon bristles are soft, luxurious, and dense, which is perfect for picking up the right amount of the Ambient Lighting Powder.

When I use this brush, I will use a light sweeping motion over the powder instead of “swirling” so it doesn't kick up too much product in the pan. After that I sweep the brush lightly across my face to deposit a light layer of the powder. I don't think this brush is supposed to be used with the “buffing” motion as it can move your makeup underneath, or deposit too much powder.

Due to its wide and flat shape, I suppose you can use this brush for other purposes as well, such as applying a highlighter or bronzer, or even powder foundation.

The brush comes protected in its matching brown velvet protective pouch for travel or storage. I did not experience any shedding at all during use or after multiple washes. The dense bristles wash well, retain their shape, but can take some time to dry.

Footnote

This is a cute little brush to have if you i) travel a lot, ii) have a hard time picking up the right amount of the Ambient Lighting Powder, or iii) want to complete your Ambient Lighting collection. It's not a necessary tool to have by any means since you can use other brush that you probably already have in your stash to apply the powder. It doesn't do anything too special, nor make much difference in the outcome than my other powder brush does. I will admit, I totally bought it just for the cute factor and to complete my Ambient Lighting collection! :)

  • Looks like an upgraded version of the brush that comes with Benefit’s boxed blushes, I can imagine applying contour with this!

  • Hi Jaa, hourglass things just look so premium. I may get this brush to keep in my handbag as the touch up brush. I just bought the ambient powder palette two days ago. Absolutely love it. By the way, I put my name on the waiting list for the Nars Ita brush. After seeing your review I just can’t get it out of my head. I think it’s a good sign that I need it:)

    • It would make a great touch up brush definitely! Congrats on getting (and loving!) the Ambient Lighting Palette! I love mine as well. :D

Also yay for getting the Nars Ita brush! It will be worth the wait once you have used it. Makes contouring super easy. Anyone can do it! I just hope you get off the wait list soon soon!!

Do you have a beauty blog, too, Grace? You can always leave a link here if you do! :)

      • Thanks Jaa. You are so nice to new bloggers. I am getting things ready for my blog. It should be up and running soon. Your blog is very inspiring, I can tell you put lots of passion and commitment into it x

  • Hey Jaa, I like how cute and handy it is. However since you don’t recommend it as a must have I will pass this one. Thank you for sharing.

  • Oh I could have used something like this during my holiday. My brushes are not very travel-proof… Plus, it’s the kind of brush that I don’t already have 23 different-but-the-same ones of :-)

    • I know what you mean! I seem to like buying the same kind of brushes over and over, too. Though I may not have 23 versions of it, lol.

  • I though so too that it wouldn’t be an “essential”. I have the Hourglass palette and just use my normal blush brush (which is quite fluffy) to dust everything on! Works just fine! :-)

  • I always get distracted by hourglass packaging. It’s all sort of smooth and tubey and stuff. Kind of makes me want to just run my fingers over it, and didn’t that just make me sound kind of creepy?

Mind you, I stood in the Dubai Mall Spehora for an indecently long amount of time fondling the bristles of the big soft kabuki brushes, so maybe I just have a strange brush thing going on… ;-)

    • You are perfectly normal, Syl! Because I do the very same thing, too. So yes, we are both normal and that’s a very normal behavior. LOL!

  • I was eyeing this the other day when I was in Sephora, but I have a million brushes already and convinced myself I don’t need it. It’s definitely cute though and perhaps one day I’ll get it but I’m happy with my current powder brushes for now.

    • The cuteness of it really lured me in lol. It’s not a required tool, especially when you already have something else that works great! :)
