Chanel Écriture de Chanel Eyeliner Pen Review & Swatches

Today I'd like to share a simple, colorful eye look I created using the new Chanel liquid eyeliner pen and some of the MAC and Urban Decay eyeshadows! The look has a little bit of green, a little bit of pink, and a little bit of coral that I think look really good together. I hope you enjoy! :)

Part of the new Chanel États Poétiques for Fall 2014 collection is the revamped formula of their liquid eyeliner pen. The new pen no longer has a gold ring around it. The packaging has been streamlined to just a basic black pen. The dispensing mechanism is also different; the old one is a twist-and-apply while the new one is a shake-and-apply. Some like it, others don't. I personally don't mind either way.

The tip is also different. The new one has a stiff felt tip. Stiff, but not inflexible. If you like the soft tip of Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner or Marc Jacobs Magic Marc’er Precision Pen Eyeliner, you are probably not going to like this. But if you like the stiff and firm tip of the Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner or Urban Decay Perversion Ink For Eyes Waterproof Precision Eye Pen, you are in luck!

I actually don't mind too much about the firm tip as long as the formula flows smoothly. Considering the high price tag (for essentially just a black liquid liner pen), it was actually a relief to see that the new Chanel pen does not disappoint when it comes to a smooth flow and homogenous color distribution. I am able to get sharp lines, thick or thin, with ease. I can also get it right down to between lash roots to create an illusion of thicker lashes. The winged out look can get a little tricky, though, since the firm tip seems to tug the skin a little bit if pressed too hard.

Another good thing about firm tips is, they stay sharp and won't “fray” over time. One problem I encountered with soft tip pens is that they are great to use in the beginning but later on the soft tip can become so soft and frayed that drawing crisp lines and sharp wings may prove an impossible task. With this Chanel one, I know I won't have that problem!

The color I have is called Noir. It is black but not the blackest black I've seen (see comparison swatches below). The formula is water-based, dries quickly, and leaves a shiny finish. It is not waterproof but once it sets, it does not seem to budge or transfer. My overall experience based on regular work days is that they stay put and smudge-free all day.

The breakdown

  • All over lid (below the crease): MAC Steamy
  • Crease: MAC Amber Lights
  • Outer corner: MAC Plum Dressing and Smut
  • Inner corner and brow bone: A mix of Venus and Foxy from Urban Decay Naked Basics palette
  • Upper lash line: Chanel Écriture de Chanel Eyeliner Pen and Nicka K New York shimmer Eyeliner
  • Lower lash line: Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Woodstock

Probably a little too colorful for summer but I do like the result! This look was inspired by the promo image of the model wearing the new Chanel eyeshadows which I did not buy any since I already have something similar in my collection. I like how adding just a thin, crisp line of green on top of the black liner totally spiced up the look that would have been quite plain otherwise.

So what do you think of the look and/or the pen? Will you be splurging or saving? :)

  • I really really love the eye look that you created!!!!!!!!! ♡♡♡♡
The Chanel eyeliner’s packaging looks really sleek, chic, cool and everything but USD$35!! What a price!!! But it’s Chanel so I can’t expect anything else lol.

The thing about felt tip liners are that I’m afraid it’ll dry out super fast and I would have wasted my $$$ on a product I barely used :-( I’m not a fan of stiff tips too. Although I think this would be a great gift for anyone!

    • Actually it lasts quite a while as long as you keep the cap tightly closed! :) $35 is steep for a liquid liner pen but yes, it’s a Chanel, can’t expect any less lol!

  • Love the eye look you created, Jaa — especially with Amber Lights, one of my favorite MAC shadows and something I also wrote about in my latest post! I like the idea of a stiffer tip for liquid liner. I haven’t used liquid liners in years as they are more difficult to work with (for my unsteady hand), but should I ever try one again, this one would be on my list! Smudgeproof, budgeproof, and a tip that doesn’t fray is a winner in my book!

    • Yes to Amber Lights! Gorgeous color yeah? The pen would be right up your alley, Carolyn, if you ever chose to try it!

  • Hey Jaa, I absolutely love your eye makeup. I am quite intrigued to try the eyeliner after your review. Thank you so much for sharing. xx

  • Love iiiiiiiiiiiiiit!! * really long noodly arms waving like an anime character freaking out* :-D
The eyeliner pen looks awesome – I love felt tip ones, including my faithful Lancome one, but the tip does fray a little. Excited to hear that this one does not!

The colours you’ve used are so pretty, but I especially like the green contrasting with the woodstock pink. I need to do more double lining with black+a shimmer colour!

    • Lancôme Artliner? I ran out of that thing ages ago and haven’t replaced it yet! Been too busy trying new things ha ha. Good stuff!

Double lining is fun! Black and shimmer combo sounds like an idea! I will try it, too!

      • Not the Artliner ones – it seems to be called ‘Liner Plume’ or something like that? I have to admit, I haven’t really tried much in the way of eyeliners from Lancome. I like the brand, but once I got hooked on UD there was no going back, LOL!

    • For the price, it had better last a while! LOL! Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Jenn! Returning comment as we speak!

    • It does! :) Thanks, Jeannie! How’s your Thai food cooking going? I like looking and drooling at your Thai food IG photos lol!

      • After my อีสาน feast I’ve been a bit lazy haha, I kept it simple this week with some แกงจืด ไข่เจียว and ข้าวผัด, my ultimate comfort food!

          • Yes! I usually buy 500g packs of minced pork or turkey, then divide them into 100g portions in ziplock bags and freeze them. I can defrost them quickly and add them to my ไข่เจียว :)

  • Jaa! That eye look! Oh my! It. Looks. Fantastic! I love love love it. As a matter of fact, I love that eye look so much that I can’t even comment on the eyeliner pen, lol.

  • I really like the look of this. I actually like that isn’t as black as some of the others. It’s going to give a slightly softened look which would probably look better on someone in their 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s.

  • Hey Jaa, what a pretty look! I definitely like that you can create a sharp line with it. Will have to swatch it when it becomes available here!

    • Thank you, Sunny! The stiff tip is indeed nice for creating sharp lines! What liner are you currently using again? You always make those wings look so crisp and perfect!

      • Aww thanks, Jaa! I’ve actually been giving the Benefit liner another go (and it’s getting better for some reason, but probably still not perfect), and most of the time I just use a gel liner! Can’t wait to lay my hands on the new Hourglass one! The promo image looks SO good!

        • I know right?!!! SO glad that Sephora will be selling them separately! I don’t quite understand why they think we need to buy 3 at once haha. Maybe there is so little product in one or something.

  • Love the look and the pics (as usual!) Jaa! How do do the Stila and Eyeko liners compare to this?
And btw…nothing is too colourful for the summer!!! Craziness. .craziness.

    • I am not a fan of the Eyeko liner. The tip is too stiff and the formula is so dry. The ink doesn’t flow smoothly, either, and I have a hard time drawing sharp and even lines.

For the Stila liner, it is my HG along with the Marc Jacobs one! Soft tip, jet black, smooth flow, I have nothing but love for them. ^_^

This one by Chanel has a stiff tip of the Eyeko but the ink and flow of the Stila and MJ. :)
