Current Favorite Combos #1

I love mixing things. Skincare, not so much, but makeup, I do it all the time. From base products, to cheek and lip colors, to fragrances! I think it is a lot of fun. You get to be creative and allow yourself a chance to discover new colors and formulas. This post is all about my current favorite makeup combos that I've been wearing a lot lately! :)

Base

I still stand by my review of the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer. This thing is a life-saver for when I need my face to look the smoothest and most mattified. I introduced it to everyone in my family and they all loved it so much that they went out to buy their own bottle the very next day! I apply the primer first, then I mix one small drop of the Cover FX Custom Cover Drops with the Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation to darken the shade to match my current skin tone and to provide additional coverage. I love the light texture and fair coverage of the Aqua Foundation but the color I bought is a little too light for me (I bought it online blind so a shade mismatch is bound to happen!). I'm working on the review of the Cover FX Custom Cover Drops right now so expect to read it here by next week! :)

Cheeks

L-R: Burberry Lip & Cheek Bloom in No.03 Hydrangea and NARS Dual-Intensity Blush in Adoration

For cheek color, I've been loving the Burberry Lip & Cheek Bloom in No.03 Hydrangea (review)! It is such a perfect pink color for me (if I may say so). I feel that it adds such freshness and youthfulness to the skin in the most effortless way. After that I dab a little bit of the pale baby pink highlighting shade from the NARS Dual-Intensity Blush in Adoration (review) slightly above the apples of my cheeks for an extra bit of glowiness. Love, love, love this combo! :)

Lips

L-R: Tom Ford Lip Color in 19 Aphrodisiac, YSL Baby Doll Kiss & Blush in 02 Rose Frivole and 04 Orange Fougueux, and Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lip Crème in So Rouge

I rarely use only one lip product at a time. Lip color is what I experiment with the most. I love doing gradient lips with the “paler” color on the outer part of the lips and the “darker/pop” color on the inside of the lips. The combinations I've been wearing lately are either the YSL Baby Doll Kiss & Blush in 02 Rose Frivole or 04 Orange Fougueux applied all over the lips and topped with either the Tom Ford Lip Color in 19 Aphrodisiac (review) or Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lip Crème in So Rouge (review), respectively, on the inner lips. Sometimes I'll also finish with a thin layer of clear gloss to add plumpness and shine. :)

Fragrances

L-R: Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black EDP, Nirvana White EDP, and Nirvana White Solid Perfume Compact

I've been wearing the Elizabeth and James Nirvana fragrances since their launch. I wear them so often that I sometimes feel that I'd get bored of them soon but that never happened! In the beginning I started with just the Nirvana White which is a blend of “peony, muguet, and tender musk”. Soon after I started layering it with the Nirvana Black which has a mixture of “violet, sandalwood, and vanilla”. The White one is definitely more peony and feminine (in a modern way) but upon adding the Black, the scent shifts slightly to something more sweet, warm, and masculine. I also have the Nirvana White Solid Perfume Compact tucked in my handbag for a quick pick-me-up during the day. (Yes, I still keep that piece of clear plastic cover in the compact. Don't ask me why. I think it looks more pristine that way! :D)

The latest combination I tried that proved to be a disaster was layering an oil tint over a lipstick! Duh. I should have known that the oil would “melt” the lipstick coverage right off and leave the finish streaky and unpleasant! Ugh. Never again!

What about you? Do you like experimenting with different makeup combinations? What part of the face do you like to get creative with the most?

  • I love E&J Nirvana White! I definitely agree that it’s super feminine, and just makes me feel sexy and girly. After reading your thoughts, I really want to try Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation. I think we can get them at Sephora in the states so I might check it out next time. I have so many foundations though… need to work through slowly haha.

    • It’s so hard to finish a foundation, though! Takes forever (for me) it seems! I definitely recommend the KGD Aqua Foundation! Everyone who has tried it loves it! :)

  • It’s weird of me to notice it, but I love the background of your photos. A splash of colours… and what interesting combos! I’ve read mixed reviews of the Cover FX custom cover drops… but one thing for sure, I love the KGD foundation on its own :-)

    • Thanks, Lily! It’s my boyfriend’s painting in the background. One of these days he’s going to ask me to pay royalty fees. LOL

  • Hey Jaa, I actually wrote a post about combos a little while back! I don’t layer as a general rule, but I have found some combos that I like! I don’t really mix base products tho, and I flat out dislike the Cover FX drops :p

    • LOL. Read your post and I agree with you in so many aspects! I don’t think it’s a product for everyone but it definitely helps me when it comes to darkening my base to fit my current skin. Although I think I still prefer my Giorgio Armani Maestro Liquid Summer Bronzer a little better!

    • I’m only mixing the Cover FX Custom Cover Drops with foundations that are too light for my skin, though. Using it alone is a no-no for me due to its super yellow color. It’s probably good for adding more coverage to your base, too, but yeah, the combination has to be just right or your skin color would look way off. One tricky product to use for sure!

  • You know as much as I adore YSL, I’ve never tried any of the Baby Doll Kiss & Blushes! I somehow overlooked that entire collection. And I haven’t even tried the Marc Jacobs So Rouge that we received as a VIB gift! So much makeup…so little time.

    • LOL I’m just so crazy about the YSL Baby Doll Kiss & Blushes at the moment! I just bought a few more shades recently! Ooops! I really should write up a proper review soon.

Same here, Kimmy. So many products to test, so little time!

  • Ooh, love the idea of this post- great combos! I’ve been dying to try Koh Gen Doh foundations and I like the idea of layering lip products like that :)

    • The Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Moisture Foundation is REALLY awesome, too, Jen! I actually like that one a bit better! SOOOOO expensive, though!

  • Great post!
I definitely want to try mixing the White and the Black perfume. I have samples of both and didn’t think they work individually on me although they ARE lovely. :)

    • I love the White one alone and layered over the black. The black one alone doesn’t quite get along with my body chemistry!

  • What a fun post! I too love a good combo platter. One I’ve been using almost daily is ColourPop Birthday Suit (pinky brown) as my creme blush base layer topped with whatever powder blush I want to wear that day. The creme blush really locks the powder in place all day and intensifies it. It also adds a bit more dimension if I use it in concert with a bolder brighter blush, like Tarte Natural Beauty (red) on the apples and Birthday Suit on the cheekbones. LOL – I think we’ve all pulled a losing combination from the till at least once like the oil over lipstick thing! Can’t wait to read your thoughts on the Cover FX droplets!

    • Annnnd I still haven’t tried anything from ColourPop! Horror right? I know I know, I’m a terrible blogger! LOL There are just too many gorgeous colors and I guess I’m a little bit overwhelmed with the selection. ^_^ I do layer powder blush over cream blush regularly. You’re so right, it lengthens the staying power of both!
