Question of the week

What’s the worst thing anyone has ever said to you about your blog and what was your reaction?
BISC Vol.18 Authors

MELISSA | Switzerland | Kiss & Make-up

No one has ever actually said anything bad or mean about my blog – at least not to my face – so I guess I’m lucky! However I did once receive an anonymous email saying that bloggers like me who review products that have been sent to them for free are sell-outs and that blogging about something as trivial as make-up and beauty makes me superficial and fake. I didn’t let it get to me though. I just hit ‘delete’ and forgot about it. Until now, that is, so uhm, yeah, thanks for that, Jaa ?

ANNE | Germany | Linda, Libra, Loca

To be honest, only a few selected people in my personal life know that I blog, which is probably why I rarely face negative comments. After all they are friends and family and supposed to be supportive, no?

In an argument, Mr. Loca once told me he couldn’t understand why “Someone as intelligent as I would waste my time on something as superficial as writing about makeup” (my father would probably agree on that), but after we got past the slamming doors part, he apologized. Beauty may be superficial to some, but it is so much more than makeup.

ANGELA | Canada | Do Want Makeup

I don’t know if anybody has said anything negative to me about my blog, to be honest! People tend to be curious rather than critical. Bf has told me that I come across much more cheerful/happy on my blog than I actually am in real life, but I think that is more of a comment on my personality than my blog… ಠ_ಠ  My reaction: of course I’m more cheerful on my blog; I get to talk about stuff that I love and excites me!

LILY | Malaysia | Chloe Ash

My experience is very positive, thank heavens. I have received some emails before, saying that I’m ugly and really, I’m secure and mature enough to laugh it off. I don’t know why, but it just cracked me up. I remember a fellow blogger say that you know you’ve made it when you get hate mails. Hahaha! In all seriousness though, my genuine readers have been awesome. I get chats on Facebook, Twitter and even emails, and they’re the sweetest people on earth!

AGATA | USA | Her and Makeup

I have never had anyone say anything really bad or hurtful about my blog so I consider myself lucky! However, one of my friends, after he found out I had a beauty blog, said to me that I became so vain writing about lipsticks and makeup. It was a little hurtful but I explained to him that a beauty blog is more than just writing about makeup, it’s a way of expressing your creativity and connecting with other wonderful people who share the same interests as you as well as passing your knowledge and skills to others.

RAE | Canada | the Notice: a beauty blog

Honestly, no one’s ever said anything really terrible about my blog to my face… But hey, who knows what they’ve been saying behind my back! ?

JAA | Thailand | Hello Jaa

Back when I first started Hello Jaa (only a month into it I think), someone commented publicly that I was trying to be like Temptalia and told me to “be original”. I was slightly upset (since I would never copy anyone ever) but decided to just brush it off. I know what I’m doing and I think over time I have proven that Hello Jaa has its own style in terms of writing, format, and photography. One time I was also told that I used too many English words in my Thai translations so I’ve been improving on that and trying my best to translate every word into Thai. There is also a thread mentioning that my reviews can’t be trusted because I came out of nowhere and started reviewing all these expensive makeup. Trust me, I always disclose when I receive product samples! Other than that, everyone else has been really nice to me and my blog. I’ve even become good friends with so many of my readers. :)

  • You were trying to be Temptalia? Now that is absurd! Your blog is totally different from hers, and I like your pictures way better.

I’d like to think so, too, but apparently some people are seeing things differently. ;)

      Thanks so much, Anne! ❤

  • Cindy says:

I love your blog! Temptalia has great information and is helpful when finding dupes but it seems a bit clinical for me. Your pictures inspired me to be creative with my angles and backdrops and I definitely recognize your photos when I see them online :)

    • Jaa says:

Aww thanks so much, Cindy! I love it when I hear that my photos inspire people to be more creative with theirs. :) I agree, Temptalia is the best place for finding dupes!!

  • They started a THREAD about it? Dang. But honestly, I do kind of ‘get’ it. Your blog is SO professional and you REALLY stand out from the rest of us with your amazing photos and your high-quality content. So I guess I understand that some people were like ‘whuuuut, where did this girl come from, how does she do it, she’s too good to be true’ at first. Not that it justifies people being a-holes about it of course, lol.

    • Jaa says:

The thread wasn’t specifically about me but beauty bloggers in general and they happened to talk about me. LOL. I guess I kind of came out of nowhere just like they said! ^_^

Thank you so much for your kind words, Melissa! Means the world to me! ❤

  • Erin says:

I can’t imagine anyone saying anything bad about you, Jaa. I’ve always liked your blog.

I’ve never had anyone say anything to me directly or in my blog comments. I’ve had other people attack me quite viciously on my comments on other people’s blogs though. Mostly that I don’t know what I’m talking about when it comes to makeup or skincare. I just try to brush it off.

Part of it is my own fault for correcting people occasionally when they are spreading misinformation about things like “How to shrink your pores” or “How to repair split ends”.

    • Jaa says:

Thanks so much for being so kind, Erin! :)

Wow, they did that?! I’ve always thought of you as a very knowledgeable person when it comes to body and skincare! I learn something new and useful every time I read your blog. And your explanation always makes sense! Sigh. Don’t let them get to you, though. People are always going to have opinions. :-/

  • Kelly says:

There are always going to be certain types of people who view makeup and/or blogging as something superficial and/or unnecessary for whatever reason. I just think to myself that they have their reasons, even if they are sometimes flawed, and don’t take it personally. Everyone has a hobby that they spend time and money on whether they realize it or not and makeup just happens to be something I like versus say video games or collecting porcelain figurines. That being said, I can’t believe someone posted a thread saying you are untrustworthy and came out of nowhere. Most bloggers come out of nowhere so what does that even mean? LOL Maybe they just found your site to be so professional that they couldn’t believe a normal person could be so awesome all by herself ;-) Also, I don’t think that posting makeup reviews automatically makes you “like Temptalia.” There are key questions that get answered in most blog reviews and just because you format those questions doesn’t mean you are copying someone else. I find your photos to be artful and original and your review formats are personable which I like.

    • Jaa says:

Thank you so so much for your sweet and kind words, Kelly! :) Yeah, I don’t get it either why people would look down on anyone who’s into makeup and beauty. To me, it’s art; it allows me to be creative, to be happy, to love myself. It’s like painting except the canvas is my own face. Painters buy paints then why is it wrong for me to buy makeup to paint my face?

Yeah, I was a little confused myself when they said I came out of nowhere. Well, didn’t we all at one point? LOL. I’d been collecting makeup way before I started my blog so yeah, I had a lot of makeup to talk about from the get-go. I buy 99.99999999% of everything I review with my own funds and I always disclose it at the very top of each page before the review, so I don’t know what else I have to do. LOL.

  • Fiona says:

Honestly Jaa, your blog is absolutely stunning and the picture clarity is phenomenal. i love your blog.

  • Angela says:

If by “copying Temptalia”, they mean beautiful, professional-looking photos and great content then I guess that’s copying :P In all seriousness, you clearly have your own style and way of doing things! I never thought you were trying to copy anybody; my first thought was “dammit her photos are awesome!” >:D

    • Jaa says:

Haha thanks so much, Angela! :) I don’t think I’m ever in the same league as Temptalia! Her site is way, way, way more advanced. It’s like a wikipedia of makeup world! :D
