MAC Pink Plaid and Chatterbox Lipsticks Review & Swatches

It's been a (long) while since I bought my last MAC lipstick! I did a compilation post at the end of 2013 (see it here) and to my horror, my collection hasn't grown since! Well, actually I bought a couple of those Patentpolish Lip Pencils (review) and Huggable Lipcolours (review) but that's about it, nothing from the permanent line. So, I'm quite happy to be adding two more shades to my collection! And please forgive me if I didn't go for the “fall-appropriate” colors. You know I have a thing for pink. ;D

I explained the differences between MAC lipstick finishes in details in my MAC Lipstick Collection 2013 Comparison & Swatches post, so if you're interested, please follow the link. The two lipsticks I'm featuring today are Pink Plaid and Chatterbox. Pink Plaid has a matte finish while Chatterbox has an amplified creme finish. Both are packaged in a traditional MAC lipstick casing — pearlescent black with silver accent. Both also have the usual MAC lipstick soft vanilla scent (I !).

Pink Plaid

Pink Plaid may look like a medium rosy pink in the tube but the actual color when swatched and applied on lips is pale, muted purple-tinged pink. It looks slightly nude and powdery on my NC30 complexion. I'm still undecided whether I like this shade on me. It looks decent when paired with a dramatic eye makeup but for everyday office wear, it makes me look washed out and quite “unhealthy”. I think this shade is more suitable to fairer skin tones with pale lips since I imagine it will look more natural on.

Formula-wise, it is a quality matte lipstick! It doesn't feel as dry as most mattes on the market. In fact, it applies smoothly and evenly as long as you exfoliate and apply a little bit of lip balm on your lips beforehand (it has a tendency to cling on to dry patches and accentuate fine lines if worn directly on dry, bare lips).

It goes on opaque and covers my naturally pigmented lips in one pass. Though I would try not to apply more than a few layers to prevent the finished look from looking cakey and thick. It wears well for about 5 hours on me and while it certainly isn't a hydrating formula, it isn't drying, either, even after the color wears off.

Chatterbox is a brighter, more colorful shade in comparison! It is the kind of neutral pink that doesn't wash me out but it seems to bring out the “yellowness” in my complexion just a little bit. It is still a cheerful and wearable shade nonetheless. It is a color that looks great on its own (or with minimal makeup) as well as with heavy eye makeup.

Being an amplified creme, a hybrid of amplified and cremesheen (my favorite MAC lipstick finish), you can always count on its pigmentation and creamy texture! In fact, it's so creamy that you may have to blot between layers to prevent the lipstick from becoming too smudgy/slippery. The formula glides on beautifully and does not accentuate dry lips and fine lines at all. It is much more moisturizing than Pink Plaid. A bonus point is that it seems to enhance the appearance of my lips making them look fuller and plump upon application! :)

It is not as opaque as Pink Plaid, though. On my lips, it takes a few passes to achieve a full coverage. The formula leaves a gorgeous soft sheen but will wear down and set to a semi-matte within a couple of hours. The wear time is around 4 hours on me before I notice some fading. It fades evenly, though, and leaves a soft pink stain behind.

  • I love that you didn’t go for “fall-appropriate” lipsticks! I typically prefer spring/summer lipsticks anyway :). Chatterbox really does make your lips look very full!

  • Pink Plaid kinda reminds me of how Pink Nouveau looks on me when it eventually fades… washes me out and makes me look a little sick. So weird considering the fact that the color looks amazing on the first swipe! Chatterbox on the other hand is something that’s been on my wishlist for so long, I don’t know why I haven’t gotten around to getting a bullet yet! Ahhh, soon.

    • Exactly! On me, Pink Plaid doesn’t look “that” bad when I first swipe it on but later on in the day when the color starts to fade, it just doesn’t look right. I look too pale and unhealthy then. It’s a color that needs re-application! :)

And splurge on Chatterbox already! ;D

  • Hey Jaa, I think Pink Plaid is most definitely too cool-toned for me. I can MAYBE do Chatterbox, but I’m not even sure it’s optimal. They do look great on you though! I love your eye look here!

It’s been a LONG time since I bought a MAC lipstick, but I was lucky enough to receive Fashion Revival for review and I do love that one! MAC does a good matte :)

    • Thank you, Sunny! Fashion Revival looks great on you! I do love both matte and retro matte from MAC and I think they are one of the better mattes out there. :)

  • Speaking as a pale rogue with pale lips, I can absolutely promise you that Pink Plaid will not look natural :-P That is, if it goes on me as it does on you – with that opaque, whitish base to it. I don’t think that sort of deal looks precisely ‘natural’ on *anyone* – although note that I don’t mean it won’t look *good* :-D MAC seems to really like their whitish bases, which I can’t understand – but then I’m probably just envious because they don’t look good on me, LOL!

Chatterbox looks like a nice classic ‘Barbie’ pink on you! :-) I see what you mean by the plumping effect, LOL: IT’S A KISSYJAA! :-D I like Chatterbox better on you, both for the colour and the finish :-)

    • LOL no? It’s just that I have seen swatches of Pink Plaid on paler skin and it looks really nice on them! OK, it may not look exactly natural, natural, but definitely more natural than it does on me. ^_^ Some of them even said it’s their MLBB shade! It’s hard to imagine it being a MLBB shade on anyone but for some it is! ;D

Kissyjaa! I likie!!! Call me Kissyjaa!!!

  • Oh wow, both shades look super duper pretty on you!
Honestly though, I do not like MAC lipsticks. I had two lustre ones and that was it. That was a long time ago, and they have added many different formulations plus I’ve been hearing so much about MAC lipsticks lately (all the good things!). So bottom line is I’m itching for a few for my self, too!
I’m going to check out your links now. They would help me a lot! :)

    • I’m not too crazy about a lustre finish myself so I can see why you don’t like it! Amplified and Amplified Cremesheen are however something totally different. They are super creamy and pigmented. I have a feeling you will like these more. :)

  • I totally prefer the Chatterbox on you. From formula to color. I’d return the other one or give it away to a cooler toned medium complected friend!

  • Pink is ALWAYS APPROPRIATE! ;) I love both of these on you. I can see what you mean about Pink Plaid washing you out unless it’s paired with a bolder eye look, but I think it’s really beautiful. Maybe for office days pair it with a black winged eye? Could be amazing! And CHATTERBOX! Girl, that color is everything fabulous on your face! I WANT! I am so impressed with your makeup skills, dude. That eye is incredible!!
I feel like I buy at least 2 MAC lipsticks a month without even meaning to. I have 3 on their way right now. :O MAC lipsticks are by far my favorite! Chatterbox is going on my wish list immediately. :)

    • That’s a good idea, Kristen! I will try that! :D And thanks so much for the compliment! It means the world to me! ^_^

3 on the way??! You go girl! What colors are they? At this rate soon you’ll have the entire collection of MAC lipsticks! ;D

  • They are really pretty on you but I can’t carry off light or pale pinks. My favourite MAC lipstick to date is Viva Glam Cyndi that came out many years back. It’s a coral pink. Too bad it’s limited edition but I’m sure there are dupes for it out there.

  • You look great in either picture, but I love Chatterbox more on you :D I think I have a lipstick in a similaer color!! also.. amazing job with the eyes…so beautiful!!

  • I spent all my life avoiding pink shades like these because they make me look like death, but you wear them well! I love MAC lipsticks and aren’t picky about formulas – they all have their pros/cons. :)

    • Thanks and same here, Liz! I really don’t have favorite formulas… I can practically use anything from any brand really. LOL. I’m not picky when it comes to lipsticks but eyeshadows? I AM super picky!

  • Chatterbox is one of my all time favourite lipstick. With all the berry lips in the blogging world, this post is like a breath of fresh air. Pink Plaid just immediately went into my wishlist. Xx
