I wouldn't have found out about this wonderful eye & lip makeup remover had I not run out of my trusty Lancôme Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover when I was on vacation in Thailand a couple weeks ago! Not ready to spend $$$ on the new bottle of the Lancôme that I know I could buy for so much cheaper in the States, I thought I'd try something new and local. And wow, I'm so glad I did!

Touted as the #1 Best-Selling Eye Makeup Remover in Japan, the Bioré Makeup Remover for Eye & Lip is a bi-phase makeup remover similar to the Lancôme Bi-Facil. The top layer is clear whereas the bottom layer is cloudy (and dyed pink). When properly shaken to mix both liquids together, the combined solution turns into a thick liquid, almost gel-like consistency.

I'm sure you probably already know how to use a bi-phase remover but I'll go over it again briefly just in case. Prior to use, the bottle must be shaken vigorously to ensure that both phases are mixed thoroughly. Dispense the solution onto a cotton pad and transfer it to your (dry, made up) eye. Hold the cotton pad still for a good 5 seconds to melt/breakdown the makeup and then gently wipe downwards. Pretty simple! :)

There are a lot of things I like about this product, for example:

  • Mess-free dispensing.
The opening is a small nozzle. You can see exactly where you dispense the product onto the cotton pad. Unlike the Bi-Facil where things can get messy due to the wide opening, especially after the bottle is shaken (causing the solution to spread everywhere under the cap). I also find the thick liquid formula of the Bioré easier to control and work with.
  • Affordability.
For the same amount, Bioré costs almost 3 times less than the Bi-Facil!
  • Scent.
As much as I love the floral scent of the Bi-Facil, I don't mind the unscented Bioré, as long as it does the job!
  • Performance & Versatility.
It removes ALL kinds of eye makeup! Be it long-wearing, staining, waterproof/resistant mascara/eyeshadow/eyeliner (liquid, pencil, or gel), this thing will take it all off in a flash. No rubbing required (which is awesome for the delicate eye area — who wants premature wrinkles?!). It also removes lip products brilliantly, whether it's a lipstick, lip gloss, or lip stain — they don't stand a chance! Well, except for one product, which I will tell you more about it in a moment.
  • Little to no leftover residues.
It leaves behind the least amount of oily/greasy residues on the eye compared to all other eye makeup remover I've used thus far. In fact, if you use it sparingly, you may not even notice the slippery oily feeling at all! You can't say the same about the Bi-Facil which leaves your eyes super oily.
  • Refreshing sensation.
Now I don't know if it's my imagination, but the skin on my eyes feels really clean and refreshed afterwards!
  • Sting-free formula.
The gentle formula does not sting, irritate, or cause any type of discomfort to my eyes at all. It doesn't cause blurry vision, or make my lashes fall out, either. (However, I have come across reviews that say otherwise.)
  • Color.
Pink bottle is so much prettier than blue bottle. It's a fact! Haha!

The not-so-great part is its availability. It's not readily available in the US, but you can always buy it online. Even with the shipping fee, it's still cheaper than the Bi-Facil — you just have to wait for the shipping, that's all. I wish I had time to pick up a few more bottles with me! ;(

The test

I swatched all kinds of different makeup on my arm, let it set, and then gently wiped it down twice with a cotton pad soaked with the Bioré Makeup Remover for Eye & Lip. As you can see in the image down below, all but the Lollitint Lip & Cheek Stain (#3) came off easily. Also make note that there was not a hint of oily residues left on my arm!

The Lollitint Lip & Cheek Stain has always been a problem! It's one of the most difficult makeup to remove. In my experience, the only thing that works is cleansing oil/balm.

The Bioré Makeup Remover for Eye & Lip may not be the least expensive option compared to other drugstore eye makeup remover (I have used Neutrogena, Revlon, Almay, and Maybelline), but of all that I have used, nothing comes close to the Bioré in terms of makeup removing ease and performance.

Has it dethroned the Bi-Facil as my favorite eye makeup remover at this point? One hundred percent yes! In my opinion, the Bioré performs just as well, if not better! :) I strongly recommend this product!

Do you use a separate makeup remover for eyes? What do you look for in the formula?

I used to have this until I ran out.. I am now using the Etude House Eye and Lip makeup remover which is also a bi-phase makeup remover! Works just as well IMO, but the Biore one is a little bit thicker and oilier whereas the Etude House one is watery.

Anyway speaking of Etude House their new collection is making me want to buy EVERYTHING!!!!

    • Jaa says:

Is the Etude House cheaper? Send one over! Hehe!

Just pick one item (ok, maybe 3) that you like the most from the collection! You’ll go broke buying everything haha!

  • Oh what a fantastic discovery! And that at a third of the price of your usual make-up remover, nice.

  • Sylirael says:

Wow! :-D I, too, am a fan of Bi Facil (not the ~$70 price tag or whatever it is), but recently have decamped to the Neutrogena knock-off from the supermarket. It does the job (maybe a little more effort needed, and a little more oily), but it’s only like $10. Now I want to try this one! I don’t actually know if you can get Biore here…must investigate…

*sigh* You can get Biore at The Warehouse (like Target or KMart but for NZ) – the stuff is around the $10 mark, too. Sadly, this particular cleanser seems only to be available online at Fishpond for like $53 a bottle :-P How typical!

    • Jaa says:

LOL, is there anything at all that is priced appropriately in NZ?!! Move to America! Haha.

The oiliness has never been a problem for me, though, because I usually wash my face afterwards. As long as it gets the job done for cheap, I’m cool with it! (Considering that I go through eye makeup remover super quickly!).

  • Erin says:

Always great to find a bargain! I’ve been taking things off with coconut oil lately since I ran out of my European Bioderma stash!

  • Glassow says:

It really sounds amazing! I have been looking for a makeup remover that I can use on my lips as well :)

  • Divya says:

This sounds AMAZING! I am huge fan of Japanese skin care as it is! I really like the Clarins instant makeup remover.. in fact I have tried the Lancome one and also Chanel’s bi-phase and ladies the Clarins is better!! :D Besides being considerably cheaper too! :-)

    • Jaa says:

Everyone is raving about the Clarins one! Guess it’s time to investigate! Maybe after I’m done with my Bioré. ^_^

  • Carolyn says:

Hi Jaa! Very helpful review, especially with the swatch & remove test! It’s weird, I have tried several bottles of Bi-Facil in vain — it has such great reviews, but on me, it doesn’t remove my eye makeup anywhere as easily as Almay’s eye makeup remover pads. If I run across this Biore remover, I’m definitely going to give it a shot! :)

    • Jaa says:

That’s odd! I’ve never had any problems removing my eye makeup with the Bi-Facil, I just don’t appreciate the oily feeling afterwards. Guess it really depends on person!

That is good that the Almay’s does the job for you, it is much cheaper, too, and that’s a huge plus!

  • Grace says:

    Hi Jaa,
Sorry to tell you but I am not a big fan of the Lancôme bi-facil. I tried two travel sizes before but I just don’t like the feel of it. I heard so many positive comments about it though. I love clarins instant eye make up remover. You should try it. I don’t use many clarins products at all but this one is great.
I will try the Biore one when I go to Singapore this year. Thanks for the review x

    • Jaa says:

Another Clarins rave! Definitely on my to-try list now! Thanks for the input, Grace!

And yes, pick up a bottle of the Bioré one when you visit Singapore! I have a feeling you will really like it! :)

  • GlossBerry says:

Amazing review! gonna try this one, even though I am evry faithful to my Bioderma!

    • Jaa says:

If you already have something that works great, no need to switch! Haha. Of course, such philosophy doesn’t really apply to beauty bloggers. ;)

  • Shari says:

I grabbed this when I was in BKK a year ago and I loved it!! I wish I hoarded stuff of it when I had the chance :) It’s really a cheap alternative to let’s say Lancome’s BiFacil :) Super effective too!
