What perfect timing! I wasn't sure if I should do a full review on this set because it was out of stock soon after I bought it. But upon checking Nordstrom website last night I found that the set is now back in stock again! If you have been waiting to get your hands on these cute little mini lippies, I suggest you hurry and add it to your cart now. There is still time to have it shipped to you before the holidays if you plan to gift this to your loved one(s)!
The first thing I have to mention is the size of these lippies. They are not the “mini” size you might expect. For comparison, it is even smaller than the Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Natural Lipstick that you receive as a Birthday gift from Sephora this year (see picture). It's smaller than half the size of my thumb even. These are very, very tiny they should be called micro lipstick charms instead of mini. :D
Each individual lipstick has a removable string of oxblood brown-colored ribbon attached to the top. The ribbon comes untied and due to the small size, it may take you a little while to tie it to a perfect bow. For this mini version, you get a smooth casing with little stars stamped all over the cap instead of the signature ribbed casing of the full size. The CT logo is also present on the bottom part.
The set features the brand's iconic Kissing Fallen From The Lipstick Tree lipsticks in 3 best-selling shades: Penelope Pink, Bitch Perfect, and So Marilyn. To me, it is a good color selection because I love nude lipsticks (even though they wash me out most of the time!). The addition of the red gives this set a more interesting twist! For those who don't wear red (or nude) often, I suggest doing gradient lips with the red in the “inner” part of your lips that gradually fades out into the nude. It's such a simple look that I do often to counteract the washed-out effect of the nude and tone down the brightness of the red. Just another way to make these colors more wearable on a daily basis. :D
Now, let's dig deeper into the formula of each color!
- Penelope Pink
Penelope Pink is a beige nude that falls into my “wash-me-out nude” category if I wear it on its own. It is shimmer-free and leaves the most glossy finish compared to the other two shades. The texture is thinner and has a bit of translucency so in order to get a full coverage on my pigmented lips, I usually have to glide it across my lips a few times. It glides beautifully and oh-so-smoothly, though, truly a dream to apply! Think of melted caramel smooth! The cream finish is so soft and polished making it irresistible not to press your lips together to feel the softness! However, the caveat of this color is that it has a short staying power and fades within a couple hours on me. I suppose it is to be expected from a nude lipstick, though!
- Bitch Perfect
I have already reviewed Bitch Perfect in full details right here. This one is a more wearable nude for me. It is basically a pink/peachy nude with enough undertones that it doesn't wash me out. It contains lots of ultra fine shimmer that luckily doesn't translate to a shimmery finish on the lips. In my initial review, I find the texture slightly grainy but for some reason, I don't feel it with this mini version at all. I think it has to do with me using the heavy-duty Bite Agave Lip Mask (review) as a base now and not just the light lip balm I used in my previous review. Bitch Perfect is more pigmented and opaque than Penelope Pink so it covers most of my natural lip color in one pass and leaves a beautiful creamy finish. The staying power is also better as I didn't see any signs of fading until the 3-4 hour mark.
- So Marilyn
So Marilyn is such a classic, iconic red! I like that it's not a dark vampy red or bright red and it does not have any shimmer in the formula. It applies smoothly on the lips but as with any red lipstick, it requires a steady hand and precision to achieve a clean lip look. The shape of the bullet is well-designed to fit the shape of the lips, though, so I don't really feel the need to line my lips prior to application. Texture-wise, it is just as lovely as you'd expect. It is non-slippery and has excellent color payoff. It goes on opaque and leaves a high-impact cream red finish in one pass. It is the least glossy but its staying power outlasts the other two shades by a couple hours.
They all have that sweet lovely vanilla scent! However, my initial thoughts about the formula of this lipstick line in general still stand true. It is less forgiving on dry lips and will emphasize any dry spots you may have. I find it best to apply the lipstick over a good quality lip balm. The creamy formula leaves a thick and waxy feel in the beginning (by no means at an uncomfortable level but it's still quite noticeable) but it will eventually subside once you let it set. I don't find any of the three shades to settle into lines or leave my lips feeling dry, though. If anything, they only make my lips appear so smooth and much fuller and plumper!
As you can see in the comparison photo above, Bitch Perfect is such a nice everyday fresh-face color while So Marilyn is a true statement color with a brightening effect! Penelope Pink doesn't do much for me at all and I look less alive in it. If you are thinking of buying the full-size version, you can't go wrong with either Bitch Perfect or So Marilyn! :)
Overall, this is a great little set to try out different colors from the brand without committing to the full-sized version. The
micro mini size is uber cute and will fit into even the smallest clutch. It also makes a great luxurious gift that I'm sure will make the receiving person extra happy (I know I would!). The set is a limited edition piece so I wouldn't hesitate to grab it as soon as possible because I have a feeling it will definitely go out of stock again soon!
