I had no idea that Lipstick Queen Chinatown Glossy Pencil is the original glossy jumbo lip pencil before other brands caught on the trend and started making their own version. Did you know that? I have to say I have only heard of Lipstick Queen only recently when it was announced that Ulta will be carrying them. I'm so behind sometimes!
I recently picked up this brand new set of 3 mini Chinatown Glossy Pencils called Three To Thrill Trio at my local Ulta. I would have missed it if it hadn't been sitting right next to the register! The set features 3 pretty shades in Catalina — a muted rosy mauve or a my-lip-but-better shade, Pink Bluff — a medium nude pink, and Chase — a reddish orange. All of them are shimmer/glitter-free.
Each pencil is a twist-up style, no sharpener required. However, I'd try to use the pencil strategically to prevent the tip from getting dull by lining the lips with the pointy tip and using the side to fill in the color.
Chinatown is basically a chubby lip pencil that combines lip gloss, lipstick, and lip liner into one convenient, purse-friendly product. The formula has no scent that I'm aware of.
Lip gloss? I don't think the level of glossiness provided by a Chinatown is comparable to that of a true lip gloss. The finish has a lovely glossy sheen, no doubt about it, but it's a very soft and subtle kind that's not too over the top. It reminds me of the type of muted sheen you get from a non-sticky tinted lip balm. It fades rather quickly, though, within an hour or so I'd say, before the color sets to a satin finish.
Lipstick? A sheer lipstick at best. It goes on totally sheer and is buildable to semi-sheer. No matter how much you build, there will still be a bit of transparency in the color. Chase dries down to a soft stain that is more notable and longer-lasting on the lips than the other two. Not to say that the other two are not long-wearing! Because, believe it or not, considering how sheer these lip pencils are, they actually do well in terms of staying power! They last through lunch for me and only slightly fade throughout the afternoon, so I'd say they wear about 3-5 hours on a normal day on me.
Lip liner? I highly doubt you can use this to line your lips. The formula is a far cry from a real lip liner because it's too emollient in my opinion.
All three shades are lightweight, supremely moisturizing and comfortable to wear. The application is absolutely flawless and effortless. They are just so easy to use all around. I especially love the mini size because I can keep some in my makeup bag for on the go/touch ups!
Chinatown Lip Pencils may feel a lot like tinted lip balms, but what sets them apart is the coverage and how smooth and plump they make your lips appear. They are also longer-lasting and do not dry out lips or make them feel dry or parched at the end of the day. There are currently 8 shades available in a full-sized format and I already have my eyes set on Crime — a bright cool-toned pink (so typical of me!) — for my next purchase. I wish it was included in this set instead of Catalina but oh well!
