I was searching high and low for a way to mute my natural lip color because I could never get a true shade of my lipstick to show up on my pigmented lips. It pained me to see all the beautiful light-colored lipsticks on display and realized that I'd never be able to wear it because the color would not show up the way it's supposed to be. I've tried using a concealer and even foundation to cover my lips, but that didn't quite give me the results I was hoping for.

Naturally, concealers are meant to use on the skin and so they are made creamy for blendability and that's where the problem lies. Being creamy, it has a hard time staying on the lips and would result in mixing with whatever lip color you put on top and eventually changes the actual color of the lipstick. Not to mention some concealers are really thick and who likes the thick feeling on the lips? Foundation may also be used for the same purpose but mostly I find it to be too drying.

Enter MAC Lip Erase Lip Balm.

This flesh-toned balm comes in a twist-top jar, not the most hygenic packaging I agree. For products that come in an open jar like this, I always use a Q-tip or a small makeup spatula to get the product out. I dab a small amount of the balm on the center of my bottom lip and then spread it out with a fingertip, then I press my lips together to distribute the balm. Heat from the fingertip will help warm up the product and make it glide on more smoothly. Wait just a few minutes to let it set, then follow with your lip color. For lipsticks that are already extremely opaque, the Lip Erase may seem unnecessary but it's definitely a necessity for sheerer lipstick formulas.

There is no noticeable scent and the texture is thin and lightweight. It feels a little tacky once it sets so that the lip color has something to adhere to. With Lip Eras, I am usually able to get a full day wear of my lipstick. Pretty impressive in my opinion!

One thing I noticed about this particular product is that it does accentuate dry lips! So if you have any types of dryness and/or flakiness on your lips, do a little bit of exfoliation first, then follow with a moisturizing lip balm, and finally Lip Erase.

MAC Lip Erase Lip Balm in Pale

MAC Lip Erase comes in two shades; Pale and Dim. Dim is a little darker and more suitable for darker skin tones. I went for Pale because I wanted the maximum neutralization effect! :) One jar will last a very very long time because you only need tiny amount per application. This is a MAC Pro product, but don't worry if you don't live close to a Pro store. You can easily buy it online now through MAC website and have it shipped right to your door.

For pale lips, while you may not need this product for color-muting purpose, you may want to try it as a lip primer to extend the wear time of your lipstick. As for me, this is a life-saver product because now I can actually transfer whatever color I see in the tube onto my lips!

I’ve got pigmented lips as well. I don’t remember seeing it in the MAC store here. Wonder if it’s still available. I can’t survive without a lip balm, so if I do get a hold of the MAC Erase, I’m guessing we use the MAC prep + prime Lip and then the Mac Erase?

I believe it’s a PRO product. Can you order it online? In my experience, you don’t need to layer them. The Lip Erase also acts as a lip primer and I find that it helps lengthen the longevity as well (if not better than the Prep + Prime Lip). It also cancels out natural lip color. The only drawback is it comes in a jar and is slightly less convenient to apply. :)

I shall check if their website has it. If it does, I’ll order it online. In the meantime, will also ask the MAC stores here. It would be so nice to have the true color of the lipstick show!
