I was beyond excited to learn from Sunny that MAC Stereo Rose Mineralize Skinfinish has made a comeback! It's being re-promoted along with other goodies for A Fantasy of Flowers collection for Spring 2014. I made sure to mark the launch date on my calendar and I literally jumped on it and ordered it sight unseen the second it went online! I was so happy that I finally got my hands on the cult favorite item this time (I missed out on it again and again on previous releases).

But my happiness was short-lived. :(

Because in less than 48 hours, my heart sank upon seeing Christine's comparison swatches of Stereo Rose 2012 and Stereo Rose 2014! The Stereo Rose that I have does not look anything like the previous versions! The 2014 is much, much paler and much, much less pigmented. It also leans more peachy than coral. Based on Christine's observation, mine definitely lacks the obvious coppery veining, making it a lot paler as a result.

Operation reformulation failed. Big time. Why, MAC?

Oh well, I'm just going to review my Stereo Rose under the pretense that I don't know anything about the previous versions. So, please bear in mind that this review is based on the 2014 release! :)

Stereo Rose has a really soft, powdery texture. The product gets kicked up really easily, even with just the smallest touch of brush so be careful when you swirl your brush in it to avoid making a mess.

Depending on the amount of veining, each pan of Mineralize Skinfinish is different. Mine is mostly pale peach with high-frost metallic finish. It is so pale that, when used as a blush, it takes a lot of building up to see any color on my cheeks. I'm not going to lie, I am honestly disappointed with the color payoff. I expected a lot more than this.

Poor pigmentation aside, I have to say I do love the soft, delicate sheen it gives to my skin! In the midst of layering (furiously if I may add!), I was so sure that by the time I was done I'd be looking like a disco ball! But that's not the case at all. The high sheen looks absolutely gorgeous and very noticeable (in a good way) in daylight but at the same time, is flattering and appropriate for office/indoor lighting, too.

As with anything that has high shimmer content, Stereo Rose seems to emphasize pores so I try to use it on the areas where my pores are not noticeable, such as on the cheekbones and apples of the cheeks. I find that for my complexion, it works better as a highlighter than a blush because it hardly deposits any color on me. But if you are fair, I have a feeling you will be able to use it both as a highlighter as well as blush (if you happen to like shimmery blush that is!). I also tried dusting a really light layer all over my face, too, and wow, I have to say I adore the subtle glow effect!

The wear time is decent considering how light the pigmentation is. I do get about 5-6 hours before I start to see some fading. The frosty sheen definitely wears better, though. It stays on my cheeks throughout the entire wear.

I hope you will be able to see the slight sheen on my cheeks in the photo above. I tried to capture the frosty finish under the lighting that I have but I didn't have much luck, obviously. The sheen is much, much more pronounced in daylight, I can promise you that.

So, if you are on a lookout for a shimmery blush with light pigmentation, Stereo Rose may be your answer. If you are looking for a gorgeous highlighter with a frosty high sheen, Stereo Rose will work great for you, too. But for me, I can't really pull it off as a blush so I'll just use it as a highlighter over my other, more pigmented blush instead. :)

Hey Jaa, aww I’m so sorry to hear this is not what you wanted it to be! It sucks that MAC “reformulated” this! It looks like something I’d use more as a highlighter as well, since I’ll have to build it up if I want to use it as a blush, and it’ll probably just turn into a frosty, pore-emphasizing hot mess!

  • Oh BOO! My friend Sarah (Tatt2sandwarpaint) got one as well but hers was exactly like the previous releases! I do not know what is up with that. I know baked products can be a bit different but they shouldn’t be completely unrecognizable! Do you own Soft and Gentle? It’s really glammy/sparkly, but it lasts on my oily skin all day and gives a nice glow.

First I’m jel of your beautiful face & makeup, now I’m jel of your friend for getting lucky with the Stereo Rose!!!! LIFE IS UNFAIR!!! Haha.

I do have Soft and Gentle. One of my favorite highlighters of all time! :D

The release we got here is also not the same as previous Stereo Rose-s. I went to my local MAC immediately after reading Cristine’s post about this issue. Doesn’t look anything like Stereo Rose.

I’m so incredibly sick of MAC foisting rubbish products off on us. I was actually going to buy Stereo Rose this time around. Chanel got my money instead. *flips MAC the double bird*

Yeah, it’s very unfortunate that the new release doesn’t look anything like the original. But a friend of Kristen also purchased one and she said hers was exactly like the previous versions! So maybe I (we) had the same bad batch?
