Most contouring products are so obvious that you can just always tell when someone is wearing one. And this is one of the reasons why I don't contour on a daily basis. What if I told you that there's one product that allows you to contour and still looks perfectly natural in daylight? The one that provides a true sheer shadow to your face in a very clever way so you don't look “made up”. That one product exists and I'm going to tell you all about it in this post!

Marc Jacobs Beauty #Instamarc Light Filtering Contour Powder is a collection of two contouring powders in contrasting hues. The lighter shade is for brightening and highlighting; the darker shade is for defining and contouring. Effective and fuss-free, this product aims to create a sheer shadow to emphasize your facial features in the most foolproof way. Both powders are housed in a gigantic compact divided by a thin spacer between them. There is also a gigantic mirror which comes in handy for on-the-go application. While the compact is rather large, it's actually very thin and shouldn't be too cumbersome to travel with. The powder has no discernible scent and is infused with vitamins A, C, and E to fight free radicals and promote healthy-looking skin.

There are three shades available for selection. Mine is Dream Filter 20 which is a duo of pale pinkish vanilla highlight and medium taupe-y grayish brown contour. Both feature a creamy-matte finish without any trace of shimmer or sheen. The most fantastic thing about this particular powder is the textureso creamy, so wonderfully creamy — I am having a hard time describing it in words. You just have to feel it in person to realize how incredibly smooth it is. It feels like cream more than powder but has the ease of blending of powder.

Being incredibly fine and soft, it comes with the territory. This powder creates a lot of powder kick-up so I have learned to gently swipe my brush on the surface rather than dipping and swirling. It may seem powdery in the pan but on the skin, I assure you it is never powdery. The color payoff is on the lighter spectrum which I find a good thing. For me, I like to build the color to reach my desired intensity rather than having to try to tone it down later.

The highlighting shade may look a bit stark on my skin in my arm swatch but that's only because I built it up. In real life, I apply it in a much thinner layer. It basically just melts and becomes one with my skin so you can never tell that I'm wearing a highlight powder. It sets my under eye concealer to a perfectly brightened, skin-like and crease-free finish. The part that I also like about this shade is that I often go overboard with the amount I apply (since it's so light pigmentation-wise) yet I still don't look caked on! It can also help blur out the look of pores and sometimes I even use it as a setting powder for a light coverage on my entire face, too!

The contouring shade shows up better on my skin but it is still pretty light compared to most contouring powders out there. I just love how amazingly easy it is to blend out hard edges even if you are a beginner at this kind of thing. Being cool-toned, shimmer-less, and sheen-less, it leaves such a natural-looking finish that it's almost impossible to tell it's on your face. I like to apply it lightly in the hollows of my cheeks, down the sides of my nose as well as along my jawlines. Although Dream Filter works out OK for me, I think my better match would be the Mirage Filter which has more yellow undertones that would suit my Asian skin color better.

Longevity depends on how much is applied. I found that if I built it up a bit, it could last well from morning to evening. If worn lightly I'd average the staying power to be between 5-6 hours.

This product is a good option for those who are starting with contouring or those who are looking for a contour powder that blends in with the skin seamlessly, and with very little effort. If you are overwhelmed by the many shades of contouring powder in most palettes, I also suggest you give this one a try. When there are only 2 colors to use, and it happens to be 2 colors that work in a beautiful harmony, there's no need to think. You just grab, apply, and blend away. As simple as that! This has to be one of the easiest-to-use contouring products in my opinion.
