It is recommended that we reapply our sunscreen every few hours especially if we are outdoors (or if your skin happens to sweat or get oily a lot) but really, who has time for that? I don't. I normally apply my (liquid) sunscreen liberally in the morning and leave it at that. The thought of reapplying sunscreen during the day — over my makeup — just doesn't sit well with me regardless of how weightless it is. Then I came across this little genius product that offers added SPF in the form of powder that you can apply any time of day without adding or retracting your makeup coverage, all while mattifying the skin and keeping it matte for a long time! Yeah, I wish I had discovered the Peter Thomas Roth Oily Problem Skin Instant Mineral Powder SPF 30 a lot sooner!

Peter Thomas Roth Oily Problem Skin Instant Mineral Powder SPF 30 is a portable loose powder sunscreen specifically formulated for blemish-prone and/or oily skin. It is housed in a convenient chubby tube with a retractable built-in brush. It's very easy to use; simply remove the clear plastic cap then swipe the brush across the face to apply the powder. To close the unit, pull out the base (do not twist or you'll risk spilling the precious content) to retract the brush then replace the cap to secure the bristles and guard them against dust, and finally push the base back into its place. Easy peasy right? Almost clever even! However, I have a couple of pet peeves!

Packaging flaws

  1. The bristles are rough and can be scratchy if you apply it head on. To avoid this, I use gentle swiping motions to glide the powder across my face. The side of the bristles doesn't feel as stiff and seems to move across the face more smoothly.
  2. Sometimes the powder doesn't like to “flow” to the top of the bristles as it should. To fix this, I tap the tube against the back of my hand gently, then swipe the brush back and forth in the palm of my hand several times. This seems to help dispense the powder to the brush quickly.
  3. I know for sure there's a way to disassemble the brush and powder “reservoir”, but I just don't know how to do it and I'm afraid I'm going to break the thing apart. So for me, there's really no way to properly clean the brush. I have used mine for several weeks now and while I haven't seen any buildup on the bristles so far, I'm afraid that it will eventually. To help keep things as clean as possible, I always blot my face with blotting films first to ensure that my skin is free of excess oil before applying the sunscreen.
  4. The bristles do shed here and there so even though the product is quick to apply on-the-go, you may still need to check with your mirror to make sure your face is free of black bristles afterwards!

OK, more than a couple of pet peeves there but I seriously hope that the brand will consider redesigning the packaging/dispensing system because the powder itself is fantastic!

Active ingredients:
Titanium Dioxide 13.65% and Zinc Oxide 14.70%

Noteworthy inactive ingredients:
Illite, silica, salicylic acid, kaolin, and willow bark extracts

For starters, unlike many powder sunscreens, this one doesn't leave an orange tint, doesn't have a sunscreen smell, and doesn't leave the skin greasy! It truly goes on transparent (and for this you may have a hard time gauging how much you have applied), lacks any kind of scent, and really mattifies the skin beautifully without interfering with your makeup. It keeps oil at bay for a very long time, too, and I find myself touching up my skin with this product a lot more often than using my powder.

It's like applying a finely-milled, translucent loose setting powder with added sunscreen benefits! It has SPF 30 with active ingredients that protects your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. What I like about it also is that you can apply a large amount of it and it still won't leave your complexion looking ashy! :) And if that's not enough, this power is so light so it doesn't settle into lines nor does it dry out your skin.

At first I doubt about how much protection I would get from a powder sunscreen (wasn't expecting much) but I'm glad to report that it stays on quite well as my face stays pretty matte for the rest of the day after I apply it. Still, I will remind myself to reapply every few hours when I'm out in the sun. Considering how easy it is to use this product, there's no excuse not to apply it liberally!

I have blemish-prone, combination with oily T-zone skin and so far I have not experienced clogged pores or irritation from using this powder daily (despite debatable ingredients). Yes, the brush could use some improvement but the product itself is truly wonderful. I highly, highly recommend it to everyone even those who dislike applying sunscreen! :)

Same here! That’s why I’m thankful to have discovered this product. It’s very convenient to bring with you and just apply it whenever and wherever you need. :)

I’ve been wanting to get the regular version.

  • Jen says:

What a smart sunscreen idea for us oilier-skinned gals! The packaging does sound annoying (the scratchy brush would drive me nuts!), but I’m glad to hear the powder itself is so nice :)

    • Jaa says:

It has some serious mattifying power, Jen! But yeah, why can’t they just revamp the packaging and brush already! :)

  • Monika says:

I bought this product maybe three years ago and still have it in my powder drawer (even though the sunscreen is expired by now), but I have to say I never liked it. Like you said in your review, the bristles are incredibly stiff and scratchy, and I either get no powder or way too much. I’ve also been doubting how effective it actually is at sun protection; I’ve heard that for a powder to have any sun-protecting properties, you’d have to pile a thick layer on, and I’ve only ever used this one as a touch-up during the day. I won’t repurchase another one.

    • Jaa says:

I probably wouldn’t rely on it as my sole sunscreen, though. Everyone knows powders don’t stand a chance when you sweat or your skin becomes oily. I do love it as a touch-up sunscreen, though, or actually I like to think of it as a mattifying touch-up powder with sunscreen benefits. :) And yeah, they should have improved on the brush already!

Thanks for being a reader, Kuz! :D I’m glad you were able to get your hands on one! Please come back and let us know how you like it! :)

  • Kelly says:

Looks nice. I will have to give this one a try as I am terrible about applying sunscreen.

    • Jaa says:

Oh this would be a great item to have for you, then! It’s very easy to apply even those who dislike sunscreen would still enjoy using it! :)
