Most of you have probably heard by now about the new epic collection of Tom Ford's new Lip Color collection called Lips & Boys which debuted last month. I apologize for the delay of this review but I didn't want to talk about something that you couldn't purchase yet. However, starting today, the collection is back online and will be available for 8 weeks only (while supplies last; meaning, run and grab it now!). I am separating my review into 2 parts. Part I today is all about pink, pink, and more pink. Part II will have more variety but there might still be a couple pinks mixed in. What can I say? I'm a pink lipstick girl at heart! :)

Tom Ford Lips & Boys Lip Colors are miniature-sized lipsticks. Each tube contains 0.07 oz (2 g) of product and retails for US$32 versus 0.1 oz (3 g) of the full-size version that retails for US$50. The mini version features the same packaging as the full-size with the same luxurious, masculine, and weighty feel except they are just smaller. I have been loving all kinds of mini things lately so I was beyond delighted to learn that one of my favorite lipstick brands came out with a mini version! Mr Ford likes to call these “clutch-sized” instead of “mini”, though, and I think it actually does sound better that way.

These lipsticks also have the same signature sweet vanilla scent that we have all come to love. And if by any chance you are afraid that these little guys will break easily, well, in my experience they do not. I didn't feel that I needed to take extra care with them during application. I still apply them the very same way I would with the full-size and so far have not had any problems with the lipstick breaking off at all. :)

New, existing, re-promoted colors

Alexander and Preston

Alexander is a warm-toned pale pink. Preston is a very bright, cool-toned purple-tinged pink. The texture of both shades, while creamy, feels a bit thin and has quite a bit more slip than regular Tom Ford Lip Colors (which feel much smoother and creamier in comparison) and therefore has a tendency to go on streaky, fall into lip lines, cling on to dry patches, and leave an uneven finish especially if applied on bare lips (Alexander more so than Preston). Well-prepped lips (exfoliated and balmed) prior to application will help the product glide on and stay on better with a more uniformed finish.

Both feel very emollient, go on semi-opaque but can be built to opaque in a few passes. They spot a good amount of fine shimmer that becomes unnoticeable once on the lips. The shimmer leaves lips a soft luminous shine. The wear time is incredibly impressive for such a light color as I do get a good 4-5 hours of wears with only minor fading towards the end. They also leave a non-drying light pink stain that seems to just last and last! Crazy! I've never seen such extended wear from any light pink lipsticks in my collection before!

Application tip: both colors may seem a little too baby doll pink at first but if you apply them lightly in a thin layer and blend out with a fingertip, they will look much more wearable and natural.

Justin and Pablo

Justin is a bright fuchsia pink. Pablo is a magenta pink with a strong hint of purple. The texture of these two shades is much better than that of Alexander and Preston. They feel smooth and creamy and feature rich color payoff similar to the brand's original Lip Color formula. Justin has more shimmer than Pablo in the tube but once applied on the lips, they both appear shimmer-free. I do get a full coverage in one pass with both shades. The application is very dreamy as they glide on beautifully on the lips without emphasizing any lip imperfections. The luminous satin shine left by these two is much more apparent and also lasts longer than that of Alexander and Preston.

While the formula glides on much easier for these bolder shades, it is a little trickier to apply them with precision! On me, these two stain right away and if I slip outside the lip line, I will need a makeup remover to clean up (or concealer to cover up). The longevity is out-of-the-world crazy! By the time I get home from a 9-hour workday, 80% of the color is still intact! Towards the very end, though, my lips feel slightly dry which is probably due to such strong staining effect.

Overall, I love these Lips & Boys lipsticks! I love the idea. I love the execution. They are super adorable, clutch-friendly, all while providing amazing formula, color payoff, and wear time. I know to some, the US$32 price tag for a mini is still quite a bit of a stretch but if you are looking from the Tom Ford's side of view, I think it is pretty reasonable for a luxury makeup brand. With a mini size and a lower price, you are likely to feel more comfortable picking out a few extra shades that you wouldn't have otherwise purchased at a full price. It's a genius marketing in a way and actually one with a win-win situation! :)

For more swatches, check out Sara at ColorMeLoud for adventurous shades, Sabrina at theBeautyLookBook for neutral shades, and of course, Christine at Temptalia for all 50 shades!

Stay tuned for Part II (which includes Stavros, Collin, Julian, Jack, Flynn, and Micheal!). ;D

  • Love that you got the bright pinks, Jaa! Pablo especially looks incredible on you! Great review! I ordered Tomas (metallic orange) and Guillermo (deep rosy brown). So excited for Nordstrom to deliver them! These will be my first TF products. :)

    • Jaa says:

Congrats, Kristen! And welcome to the club! ;D I cannot wait to read your reviews! Tomas is a very interesting color but metallic and I usually don’t get along. I am expecting your review to convince me otherwise! ;D

  • Sunny says:

You really are a pink girl at heart! That’s a lovely haul :) I ended up being reasonable enough to pick up just two (Francesco and Diego), and I’m happy with my picks. Would have loved to have Giacomo as well, but that thing is just way too popular! I like Justin and Pablo the most but you know me: I go for bright shades!

    • Jaa says:

Ohhh gotta check out your post ASAP! Giacomo is a beautiful shade and I can see why it’s so popular! I knew you’d appreciate Justin and Pablo on me. See, I’m slowly getting into the bright lip zone and it takes quite a bit of self-confidence than I imagined! I don’t like when people at work looking at me weird when I wear a lipstick in a shade slightly brighter than normal. :-/

      • Sunny says:

I say you keep working on it until people get used to seeing you with brighter lipsticks. They’ll stop thinking you look different soon enough! :)

  • Erin says:

Pablo is my favorite out of this bunch! It’s an excellent shade on you and I think it would look good on anyone actually!

  • Agata says:

I agree with everyone else, Pablo does look gorgeous on you. I haven’t picked any yet although I am really tempted but it’s such a difficult choice!

    • Jaa says:

I know right? FIFTY shades! It’s hard to narrow down! I made my purchases thinking that I had every color I needed, then bam, I saw another beautiful color and then I wanted more. Endless vicious cycle. LOL!

  • Lena L says:

What a pretty ray of pinks!
I’ve lived under the rock apparently. I did see some posts with bunch of TF lipsticks but did not know what was exactly going on except thinking some people are extremely well-off. LOL
I never ever finish lipstick anyway, so I wouldn’t mind having a few of these for myself.
Justin and Pablo look extremely pretty on you. LOVE

  • Xuvious says:

Pablo is gorgeous! I really like your eye makeup too. :)

  • Audrey says:

I really like Justin on you! They all look lovely on you, but Justin really flatters your skintone. Pinks and fuchsias tend to be color families that I stray far away from. I haven’t found any to be flattering on myself, unfortunately, but I like them on others. At least there’s so many shades in this launch that there’s bound to be at least a few for everyone. ;)

    • Jaa says:

Hi Audrey! Thanks so much! There are 10 color families to choose from, there has to be one that you’ll like! :D What kind of color do you think suit you the most? With your complexion, I thought anything would look flattering on! :)

  • Fiona says:

Oh my! These boys are really driving all the girls crazy. Your picks are ahhMAZING!! I love Justin

  • Divya says:

Love Justin and Pablo on you! I always prefer a bright reddish pink to a pure Red! Love these wish I could lay my hands on some! :-)

  • Sylirael says:

I love Justin and Pablo on you, especially Pablo!! SO GORGEOUS, UGH STOP IT OMGWTFBBQ. T_T

I so badly want one or two of these mini TF lipsticks, it’s crazy. Top of my list is probably Stavros (? I think? The taupey silver one), but then comes a huge laundry list of others, LOL!

    • Jaa says:

Stavros is such a hard-to-find color! I probably won’t get to wear it a lot but wouldn’t mind having one in my collection since it’s such a unique shade! :)

  • Liz says:

Justin and Pablo look amazing on you! These are definitely not the colours I’d pick because I find them hard to pull off, but the bright pinks are so cheerful. Love!

  • Hi Jaa,
I have just started to read your blog again. I was a little sick over the holidays. You enabled me and I just ordered Preston, such a lovely shade.
I will also link your post, thanks for your link

  • Laarni says:

I love Justin and Pablo on you, Jaa! Quick question, how did you pick your boys out of the 50 shades? Did you just look at the photos and follow your gut? Must be so hard! Ha!
