Review & Usage

Zoeva Rose Golden Complete Eye set contains 12 handcrafted, full-sized essential eye makeup brushes. They are well-constructed and well-designed for detailed work. The set shown here is Vol.1 which features dark brown wooden handles and rose gold ferrules. The wooden handles are lightweight but sturdy, well-balanced, and comfortable to hold. Each handle has a number and name of the brush imprinted in rose gold near the ferrule that should help those starting with professional brushes to know what each brush is used for. The fibers are made of either natural hair or synthetic taklon of the highest quality making it compatible with both cream/gel and powder makeup. I find that both types of fibers are decently soft and gentle on the skin. I've never felt them being prickly or scratchy during use. Each brush also comes with its own plastic sleeve to protect the bristles during travel/storage.

The set comes packaged in a really nice quality, faux leather brown pouch with rose gold detailing. I'm really impressed with its quality. It's not uncommon to see a value brush set packaged in a cheap-looking pouch that falls apart easily and has no use for anything else but that's not the case with the Zoeva pouch. Besides the good look, the pouch is quite roomy, too. In addition to the 12 brushes, there is more room in the pouch for face and cheek brushes too so that you have every tool you need to create a full face makeup.

Brushes included in this set are:

  1. 142/Concealer Buffer
  2. 224/Luxe Defined Crease
  3. 226/Smudger
  4. 227/Luxe Soft Definer
  5. 228/Luxe Crease
  6. 230/Luxe Pencil
  7. 231/Luxe Petit Crease
  8. 234/Luxe Smoky Shader
  9. 237/Detail Shader
  10. 315/Fine Liner
  11. 317/Wing Liner
  12. 322/Brow Line

Please see below for a brief review of each brush.

Zoeva 142 Concealer Buffer brush

142/Concealer Buffer (synthetic taklon hair) is meant for applying and blending concealer and I'll have to say it does it so well! The dome shape fits the contour of my eyes perfectly and the hair doesn't feel scratchy one bit which is most important when you work on the sensitive eye area. The dense bristles ensure that the cream or liquid concealer is properly blended out without leaving streaky marks.

Zoeva 224 Luxe Defined Crease brush

224/Luxe Defined Crease (natural hair) is meant for lightly blending eyeshadow in the crease. This one reminds me a lot of the MAC 224 Tapered Blending brush except the Zoeva one has a flat top instead of the MAC's dome shape. Due to the long and narrow head, it fits the crease area nicely and will lightly blend out your eyeshadow in a defined manner without smoking it all over the place.

Zoeva 226 Smudger brush

226/Smudger (synthetic taklon hair) is meant for blending eyeshadow and eyeliner along the lash line. The bristles are short and dense, and together with the flat shape, it works perfectly to smudge the harsh line along the top and bottom lash lines. You can also use it to perfect precision work or sharpen the winged liner. Sometimes I even dab a little bit of concealer to define and shape my brows.

Zoeva 227 Luxe Soft Definer brush

227/Luxe Soft Definer (natural hair) is meant for softly blending and smoothing eyeshadow. It is a larger version of the famous MAC 217 (which is one of my most favorite brushes of all time). I like to use this one to soften my eyeshadow in the crease. It smooths out harsh edges well making it a great tool to use with transition colors. I like to use it as a final step to blend out my shadows to a finish look.

Zoeva 228 Luxe Crease brush

228/Luxe Crease (natural hair) is meant for blending eyeshadow professionally. The tapered shape and size of this brush makes it a great tool for blending out eyeshadow in the crease. The result is much more defined than the 227 so I like to use it when I need to blend without smoking the shadow all over. I basically grab this one for when I need to deposit or blend colors in a precise manner.

Zoeva 230 Luxe Pencil brush

230/Luxe Pencil (natural hair) is meant for applying and smudging eyeshadow and eyeliner. It wouldn't be a complete eye brush set without a pencil brush! I'm always so glad to have another pencil brush because I never seem to have enough of them. I use it all the time to deposit colors onto my outer V and inner corners. The small, pointy tip makes it a perfect tool for smudging/softening eyeliners along the lash lines.

Zoeva 231 Luxe Petit Crease brush

231/Luxe Petit Crease (natural hair) is meant for accentuating and blending the crease. This is a longer, bigger, and slightly softer version of the 230. I think this is more of a tool for creating a cut crease look where you want to emphasize the crease. I sometimes use it to create a soft outer V because its shape allows you great control to place the color and also blend it out to the exact desired shape.

Zoeva 234 Luxe Smoky Shader brush

234/Luxe Smoky Shader (natural hair) is meant for applying and blending eyeshadow for a smokey eye effect. This one reminds me of MAC 239 that I use all the time to place eyeshadow on the lids. For me, its paddle shape works better at packing on color than blending it. It is simply too flat to be used to create a smokey effect for me. Sometimes I also use the tip to softly apply color along the lower lash line.

Zoeva 237 Detail Shader

237/Detail Shader (natural hair) is meant for detailed and precise application of eyeshadow. I use this brush pretty much the same way as the 234 and that is to pack on color on the lids. Its smaller size allows placement of color in a more defined area. I like to use it to add a highlighting shade in the middle of the lids as well as in the inner corners. The bristles are slightly less soft than the 234 though.

Zoeva 315 Fine Liner brush

315/Fine Liner (synthetic taklon hair) is meant for creating fine delicate lid lines with cream eyeliner. The bristles are long but firm enough to let you perfect a winged liner look with ease. It works best with gel eyeliner. I always tightline when I wear eye makeup and this tool is good for that. The soft taklon hair does not irritate my inner lash line at all which isn't something I can say for most fine liner brushes!

Zoeva 317 Wing Liner brush

317/Wing Liner (synthetic taklon hair) is meant for creating detailed eyeliner strokes and a perfect wing. There is no easier way to create a sharp winged liner than using this type of brush. Step 1: place the angled tip on the outer corner (to the angle desired); step 2: draft the shape of your liner along the lash line (by doing short strokes); step 3: fill in the shape to finish. Done! Super easy!

Zoeva 322 Brow Line brush

Zoeva 322 Brow Line brush
Zoeva 322 Brow Line brush

322/Brow Line (synthetic taklon hair) is meant for applying eyebrow products for expressive brows. I have to be extra careful never to put too much pressure when using this brush because it has a tendency to pick up too much color possibly due to its dense, firm, and slanted tip. I suppose it really is for creating “expressive brows”! I'd start slow for a more softened brows and build up the drama if necessary!

I've been using this set for almost a year now with regular wash and I'm happy to see that each brush has held up well. The natural hair ones may have displayed small splayed ends here and there but the synthetic ones have held up their shape well. There's no sheddding that I could detect. The imprinting on the handles hasn't wiped off yet so far for me. Despite being a “value set”, I think the quality of the Rose Golden Complete Eye set surpasses its price tag and is truly worth investing in.

Each brush is also versatile enough that you can use it for multiple tasks. Now that I know the quality and versatility of Zoeva brushes, I know this won't be my last set from them. I'm happy to own the Vol.1 set shown here but I wouldn't mind getting the Vol.2 too because well, it's hard to resist the pink and rose gold theme! If you would rather buy certain brushes only, Zoeva sells these individually as well. While I see myself using all the brushes in this set often, my recommendation if you plan to purchase individually would have to be the 224/Luxe Defined Crease, 228/Luxe Crease, and 234/Luxe Smoky Shader because they are truly versatile and can be used in most makeup applications.

Have you tried any Zoeva brushes? How was your experience with them?
