This is a product I bought against my better judgement. I once used something similar from a different brand and my experience with it was less than pleased (too greasy). Then why did I give the YSL's version a chance? You know me, I have weakness for elegant packaging! Plus, it promises to dry down to a powdery matte finish similar to a traditional powder but without the added “ashy” tone. Well, let's see if I'm lucky this time!

YSL never disappoints us when it comes to luxurious packaging design. The Touche Éclat Blur Perfector is no exception. It's probably one of my favorite designs actually. Feminine, elegant, and super simple, the lacquered pink and gold compact is a work of art. It has a full-sized mirror inside and closes with a gentle but secure snap.

A leather-backed puff is included but there isn't room for it within the compact. The black velvet pouch, however, has 2 compartments so you can fit the compact in one and the puff in the other. I suppose you want to carry the compact protected in the pouch anyway so it's not a big deal to me that I can't keep the puff in the compact. I love the look of the pristine white puff but honestly, I wish it would feel a bit softer on the skin (it tends to drag a little).

Now onto the product itself. The YSL Touche Éclat Blur Perfector is basically a scent-free, hardened silicone balm that upon application transforms to a powder with added luminous rosy glow effect. While the color is baby pink in the pan, on the skin it is pretty much translucent. There isn't really any “rosy” glow effect as claimed although it does add a bit of luminosity to the skin.

The product can be used in several ways:

  • On bare skin to smooth, blur imperfections, and perfect your complexion (replace the foundation)
  • Over foundation/makeup to set and reduce shine while maintaining the skin's natural luminosity (replace the powder)
  • For touch-up during the day to instantly mattify the skin and maintain the smooth “airbrushed” effect

Besides using the included puff, you can also use fingers or a makeup brush to apply although my favorite method is to use the puff. I find that it gives the best coverage and most mattifying and imperfection blurring effect. The drawback is that you have to wash the puff often to keep it clean and free of impurities.

And regardless of application method used, be sure to check the compact often for makeup remains and stains!

When used on bare skin, I notice an instant super mattifying effect! Large pores on my nose and cheeks are noticeably blurred out. Fine lines on my forehead and under my eyes are less prominent. My overall complexion appears much smoother, softer, and more even. It doesn't leave a greasy, shiny, heavy, or cakey finish at all (unless overapplied). It does have a slightly powdery effect but it's not the same powdery effect from a true powder.

Over foundation/makeup is a bit tricky to do but with a gentle “patting” motion using the puff, you can achieve a near-airbrushed effect without lifting the makeup underneath. I like how it instantly takes away shine while adding the skin's blurring and subtle brightening effect. It doesn't leave your skin dry and ashy-looking like most powders do. It's like you are setting your makeup with a genuinely translucent powder.

As for touching-up, I highly recommend you blot excess oil from your face using blotting sheets first. I know it beats the purpose but the thought of mixing excess oil with the product just doesn't sit well with me. The effect is similar to application over foundation/makeup — skin becomes instantly re-mattified, smooth, and flawless.

In the full-face picture below, I applied the YSL Touche Éclat Blur Perfector on bare skin. I know it's a little hard to see in photos but in person, the mattifying and blurring effect is much more prominent compared to the skin without the product. My skin also appears to be slightly brighter and more glowy. Pores are minimized (but not gone), shine is taken away, and fine lines appear less visible.

Sounds great so far right? However, I hate to break it to you but this product does not keep the skin matte for long. Within an hour or so, my face would become shiny again. It also seems to require quite a bit of product to get the desired mattifying effect, at least for me. I have a feeling this is a product best used in cold climate or on someone whose skin isn't overly oily. If you're only looking to take away shine mid-day, you're better off using traditional blotting papers. With that said, blotting papers do not provide the same blurring effect as this product does. So for me, I like to blot with blotting papers first, then follow with the Touche Éclat Blur Perfector to re-perfect my makeup and diffuse skin's imperfections.

Overall, I think it is a decent product. I can see it being a good option for those who dread the drying and “masking' finish of traditional powders. Or those who already have good skin to begin with and are only seeking something to perfect their complexion. So I really want to try this! I’m on the fence. I think it would be great in general on my nose and cheeks where pores are more prominent. Plus the packaging, gawd, so pretty!
I’m glad this is truly translucent though, I initially disregarded this because of the pale pink colour.

  • Lena L says:

    The compact really looks pretty and I can’t help but want it. I actually tried a budget primer that is similar and concluded that it is nice but not a must, so this one probably is the same. But you know what? This makes me want a YSL compact with powder or something. ^-^;;;

  • After reading the first two thirds of your review I was ready to order, but 1 hour? I don’t have time for that many touch-ups a day.

LOL! But I have a very oily T-zone, though! Not sure if it’s just me because none of the reviews I came across mentioned the short wear time!

  • Erin says:

    I will certainly pass.

  • Lulle says:

It doesn’t sound quite as life-changing as YSL made it seem. The compact though… such a beauty.

  • Jen says:

Too bad this was a bit of a disappointment (I’m sure it would have been for me, as my skin is oily). It is a unique product with beautiful products, so I can see why you were tempted!

  • Kimmy says:

I have a sample that I’ve yet to try…but I’m wary now as I’m in a similar warm, humid climate and have oily combo skin. We shall see. :-)

  • Bellyhead says:

:D Hee hee I have to admit that your beautiful photography of the compact makes me want one of these. And this is despite that fact that I used to own the Dior version which I ended up getting rid of. The concept all sounds interesting and my experiences with that one seemed exactly the same as you with the YSL!

    • Jaa says:

Thank you! ^_^ Yeah… I had high hopes for it so I’m a bit let down to see the short wear time. WHY CAN’T IT JUST BE PERFECT FOR ME?!! Haha
