Gloss Volupté is the new line of lip gloss from YSL that promises “extreme shine and luxurious hydration“. Well, that sounds just like my kind of gloss! :)
There are 23 shades for the new lineup. Sephora carries 22 while other retailers such as Nordstrom has all 23. The 23rd shade missing on Sephora is 209 Smoking which is a black-colored gloss (interesting shade!). There are also 3 different finishes to choose from: Golden (glitter), Iridescent (shimmer), and Pure (glitter and shimmer-free).
On my review today is 202 Rose Jersey (of course, it's always the light pink for me). Described as a rosy pink and it couldn't be more accurate. The gloss looks to be shimmer-free in the tube, but I noticed some super fine shimmer in it when swatched and applied on the lips. As with other YSL lip products, the Gloss Volupté also has the same familiar sweet scent of tropical fruit (it's supposed to be watermelon scent but I really smell mango!). The scent is quite strong and lingers for a good 15-20 minutes.
The luxurious packaging sports a brand new design as well – gold metal cap on a transparent tube, bridged by a silver band engraved with the brand's logo. But what intrigues me even more than the luxe exterior is the applicator! It is in the form of “parted lips” or “pouting lips” if you prefer. The applicator itself is flat and bent with a small well carved out in the middle acting as a gloss reservoir to deposit a good amount of product every time. Use the wide side to distribute the color evenly across the lips, the tip to to reach corners and the Cupid's Bow, and the edge to line. The unique design is actually practical and not at all awkward! :)
202 Rose Jersey is a sheer gloss that offers only the slightest hint of pale pink over my natural lip color. It has a really smooth and soft texture that reminds me of a mix between liquid gel and balm. It truly glides on effortlessly on the lips with a creamy, plushy feel, and with a lot of shine and zero stickiness. Considering a creamy pink shade, I was surprised to see that it did not go on streaky or settle into lip lines at all.
It also makes my lips look full, plump, and oh-so-voluptuous! Despite the amount of shimmer, Gloss Volupté doesn't feel anything like the Golden Gloss which I find to be slightly gritty and not as smooth (but Gloss Volupté also has an even stronger, sweeter mango scent than the Golden Gloss, so please keep that in mind if you find the scent of the Golden Gloss already too overwhelming).
The glossy appearance only stays on for a good few hours on my lips before fading away, so the staying power is pretty average. My lips continue to feel soft and adequately hydrated long after, though, which is uncommon for me. Most lip glosses tend to leave my lips feeling dry once the shine wears off, but Gloss Volupté really does hold true to its claim of luxurious hydration.
Being a sheer gloss, you can wear it alone with a simple makeup or layer over a nude or bright lip color for added shine. The soft shimmer in Gloss Volupté is really beautiful and does give lips a smoother, fuller appearance. I really like the 202 Rose Jersey shade that I have but I'm now also curious about some of the brighter shades whether they will have a better lasting power and pigmentation. I would also really like to try the black 209 Smoking! That would be a fun color to have around to transform any lipstick to a vampy color! :)
