YSL Fuchsia in Rage Rouge Volupté Shine Lipstick Review & Swatches

After hearing so many rave reviews of the Rouge Volupté Shine, I finally caved. The reason I held off for so long was because none of the colors from the range really spoke to me. Of course, until I came across 19 Fuchsia in Rage! I had no idea this particular color was made popular by the famous Lisa Eldridge (see video) until I did some research for this post. Now that I have experienced it firsthand, I can see why she recommended it!

The packaging of YSL lipsticks is beyond stunning. It is one the most iconic and timeless designs I've ever seen. All the details that went into it, from the reflective gold tube to the brand's logo luxuriously and intricately carved over a vivid colored band that represents the color of the lipstick inside, not only is it so beautiful to look at, it is also very practical! The tube has a good substantial weight to it and the cap closes securely with a satisfying click. There is nothing not to love about the packaging!

In terms of color, it is the strangest thing. I say this because while 19 Fuchsia in Rage appears to be a vivid grape purple-fuchsia color in the tube (the reason I bought it in the first place; its unique color), it actually reads a medium pink magenta on my lips (and arm swatches). The purple tinge does not come through at all on me, only the pink magenta base does. The gorgeous bright blue and pink shimmer seen in the tube are also absent once applied on my lips.

While I do like the translated pink magenta on me, I can't help but feel a bit let down. I really wish the color would stay true to the color I see in the tube. I will still wear it regularly because I love the formula but in terms of color, it isn't anything particularly special to me.

Speaking of formula, now that's something I heart! :)

What they say is true! The Rouge Volupté Shine formula is super moisturizing! The consistency is quite unique in the sense that it feels thin with translucent quality (almost like water) during application but since it is so pigmented, you get a full blast of color in one swipe. Normally for a lipstick this pigmented, you'd at least “feel” something on your lips, but not the case with the Rouge Volupté Shine at all. It's literally weightless!

It also glides on like butter. And not just regular butter, but melted butter! It is such a pleasure to apply although I see myself reaching for a lip brush to perfect the corners and cupid's bow from time to time especially when sharp application is needed. My lips feel instantly soft, smooth, and moisturized and the best part is that Fuchsia in Rage does not seem to emphasize lip imperfections at all. If anything, it seems to tame them instead! And did I mention the mango-scent? It's delicious!

Soon after application, the formula can feel a bit smudgy due to the slippery texture but it will quickly set to a stain-like finish with gorgeous luminous shine.

It is quite long-lasting for a “shine” formula as I can easily get a full 3 hours of wear before it starts to fade. The shine leaves my lips first, then the color fades evenly into a soft pink stain. My lips remains moisturized, though, and I find myself pressing my lips together throughout the day because the formula really makes them so soft! :)

While the color didn't turn out to be the purple I had hoped, I still do like the magenta pink it translates on me. It is the fun, pop-of-color type that brightens up my face and compliments most of makeup looks I wear. I can never have enough pink lipsticks after all!

The comforting and hydrating formula makes it a perfect lipstick to wear during colder months. I can already see myself picking out more colors from the range, except the next time I buy, I will thoroughly swatch the color both on my arm and lips to make sure that the color I'm getting is actually the color I see in the tube. :)

Have you tried the Rouge Volupté Shine? What color do you recommend?

  • Hey Jaa, I actually really like the shade on you! I can understand that it might not be as bold as you want it to be, but it’s gorgeous nonetheless!

I own Pink in Paris, which is great, but it does have some sparse silver micro-glitter that I am not so sure about. I’ve been thinking I should pick up a glitter-free shade, but I haven’t!

    • Thanks, Sunny! Yeah, I still do love the pink but a little sad it’s not the purple I wanted! :-/ Does the shimmer in Pink in Paris show up on your lips? The shimmer in Fuchsia in Rouge is practically invisible on my lips.

      • Pink in Paris really has silver micro-glitter. You don’t see it when it’s freshly applied, but as the lipstick wears off, you see silver specks on the lips. It’s not super coarse or obvious, but I’d prefer it not to be there at all!

  • I totally understand your disappointment on the purple front – it happens quite a lot with lipsticks that look super violet in the tube, I find! Such cruel trickery!! T_T *falls to ground, beating fists against the earth, rending hair, etc* ;-)

HOWEVER, it is super pretty on you, and at least you still get a hint of the purpe on the lips! :-D

The pictures in this post man. Truly, you are a sorceress!

    • Hahahahaha it’s not the end of the world, Syl, it’s OK! Get up! LOL!

Thanks! See, being a sorceress and all, I have a reputation to uphold! ;D

  • This shade is so lovely on you, and that background and photography in this post is even better than usual (which is awesome to start with)
If I were YSL, I would hire you to shoot more photos lol
Their product photos are not half appealing than yours ;-)

  • You’ve entered dangerous YSL territory here! My first was Pink in Devotion and then I bought this shade. I want more. ;)
I actually like that it’s more magenta than straight up purple. I love how soft it feels but at the same time I’m not worried about it bleeding. And your photos are so gorgeous! :)

    • I think I might have, LOL! How do you like Pink in Devotion? What’s the next color you’d like to try? I’d love to buy maybe a couple more but I’m still debating which colors I should get! :D

      Thanks so much! ^_^

  • It is such a beautiful shade on you!
I’ve only tried the Volupte range and the formula was a little too thick(?) for my taste. I’m a sheer lippy lover anyway. Your review makes me want to try the Shine range, though!
I do adore this stunning lipstick packaging (trust me I can spend 5 minutes just looking at it. lol) but don’t love it for everyday. Too heavy. ;p

    • I have 2 shades from the Rouge Volupté line but I don’t wear them very often. They are just so creamy and opaque with a lot of slip, and they have a “milky” texture making it a little tricky to apply. I almost always have to use a lip brush to apply so I won’t go over my lip line. A little too high maintenance to use on a regular basis for me. ^_^

  • I don’t think this is really supposed to look purple, is it? I LOVE this shade on you and Lisa E <3 It's been on my wish list for ages but I keep forgetting to actually test it in person. I don't have a Volupte Shine yet but everyone raves about the formula and I'll probably get to it in time.

    • No? Why not? It’s purple in the tube! Why make a purple lipstick that doesn’t apply purple!! LOL! All the raves are true, Liz! Try it soon!
