Burberry Beauty has to be one of the most underrated makeup lines and I'm clueless as to why. They don't advertise enough, maybe? Or is it the narrow range of color selection? In my book, the quality of their makeup is truly one of the best. I have their eyeshadows, lipsticks, and the famous Fresh Glow Fluid and I am completely in love with every one of them. To start off, I'll be talking about my most used item of the three – the Sheer Eye Shadow.
I purchased these when I was in New York last year during my birthday. It was a total splurge but one without regret, or remorse. In fact, it was the first time I ever saw Burberry makeup in person and I was literally blown away by its simple yet elegant presentation of the products. I was so overwhelmed at the counter that I literally wanted to buy basically everything but thanks to the salesperson who helped me narrow down to only a few products to start with.
Burberry Sheer Eye Shadows are housed in a sturdy, square compact with Burberry's signature tartan/check pattern on the lid. They are reflective gunmetal in color and the lids are strongly magnetized which is a good and bad thing. The good thing is the lid will stay completely shut but the bad thing is – you will have a hard time stacking them as they seem to repel each other! It was pretty funny actually watching them sliding off each other when I was trying to stack them for photographs (above). :D The name and shade numbers are printed on a sticker on the back of the compact. Each eyeshadow also comes with its own protective black velvet pouch (that unfortunately attracts dust like nothing else). Inside is a good-sized mirror that spans across the entire width and length of the lid. A small sponge-tipped applicator is also included which has the Burberry name inscribed on the handle. The overall packaging screams luxury, elegance, but also simplicity – a true reflection of Burberry brand.
Their eyeshadows are mostly neutrals but not quite the boring neutrals you might think. I had a hard time deciding what color to purchase but finally narrowed it down to 4 that I thought would most likely be used and would be suitable for all occasions.
I picked up:
- 02 Trench – beige (matte-satin)
- 19 Mightnight Plum – deep plum (satin)
- 21 Midnight Brown – warm brown (satin-slightly shimmery)
- 23 Dark Sable – medium brown (matte-satin)
They are all very wearable shades and the combination of the four works together so beautifully. I usually apply Trench as an all-over color then I layer it with either Midnight Plum or Midnight Brown and finish with Dark Sable on the outer corners. The complete look is very appropriate for daytime office but if you prefer a more dramatic effect, simply build the color to the desired intensity. Each color can definitely be used alone for a sheer wash of color but I prefer to mix them up just a little bit to give my eyes a more multidimensional effect.
The texture of these eyeshadows are silky soft and finely-milled and they apply evenly without any fallout. The blendability is superb, it literally doesn't take more than a few swipes back and forth of the blending brush to blend out hard edges. On the skin they feel differently than most eyeshadows I own in the sense that they seem to “melt” into the skin rather than just sitting on top. They also tend to leave this beautiful, luminous effect on the eyes with such minimal effort that I seem to reach for them more often when I'm in a rush. The name Sheer is very confusing to me as these shadows have a color payoff that is anything but sheer, in fact, you can literally get a pretty good pigmentation in just one swipe. The staying power is quite impressive as well – they last all day without fading or creasing over a good eye primer.
Burberry eyeshadows are a prime example of how “neutral” makeup should be – effortless to use yet offer sophisticated and polished result. The 4 shades that I picked up should be suitable for most skin tones and I think they are a good starter set to experiment with the formula and feel. My favorite is Midnight Brown as it gives my eyes this luminous finish with just a hint of subtle shimmery sheen when the light hits – it's just so gorgeous. It works great on its own as well as with other eyeshadows to add the extra oomph.
Obviously, Burberry eyeshadows are on the pricey side but if you have the means and are looking to treat yourself to something nice (like I did), definitely check them out. I promise you won't be disappointed.
