These cream shadows have been around for a few years now but I'm still enjoying using them as much as when they were first bought. They have this really unique texture that makes them so much fun to use! And if serious sparkly sheen on the lids is your thing, you definitely do not want to miss these.
They come in clear, sturdy glass jars with twist-off black lids that have the Chanel logo in white in the center. Absolutely simple but so effective in giving you the “I am Chanel.” statement. Each shadow comes with a small synthetic brush that is specifically designed to use with these shadows. It is a flat, angled brush that surprisingly picks up the color quite well. Use the edge of the brush to line or press the flat surface down to pack the color on the lids. The brush comes with a protective cap as well to keep the bristles clean and to keep your bag clean (how many times do we have to wrap a tissue around used brushes so that they won't smear all the colors on the inside of our bag?).
Now let me tell you all about the unique texture I was talking about! It's truly innovative and different than anything I've felt before! The soft cream feels almost like a gel formula with a springy, soufflé-like feel to it. Almost like a mousse that will slightly bounce back when you dip a brush in it. Hard to explain but trust me, it's really fun to use! If you are intrigued, stop by a Chanel counter and tell them you want to play. :D These shadows have high shimmer content to give you the most sparkling metallic sheen on the lids, and in the most sophisticated way. Each shade has its own complex of multicolored sparkles that reflect differently under the light which I will explain more below.
The 3 colors I purchased are:
- 83 Illusoire – purple with a hint of taupe + purple and silver sparkles
- 85 Mirifique – intense black + blue and silver sparkles (the most stunning shade in my opinion)
- 86 Ebloui – cranberry/burgundy brown + pink and silver sparkles
The formula is a little bit wet but they dry fairly fast once applied on the skin so be speedy during blending/smudging. I didn't notice any fallout in any of the colors except 85 Mirifique but it's a very minimal fallout, nothing disastrous. They can be used alone, over another base, or layered on top of other shadows to give you the extra shimmery sheen. For example, I like to apply 83 Illusoire as a wash of color and in a thin layer for day wear or apply over a blackened purple shadow for a dramatic purple smokey. 85 Mirifique is definitely the perfect black base for party looks! I really, really, really love this shade for creating a bold, dramatic smokey eye. Similar to 83 Illusoire, 86 Ebloui can be worn sheer or amplified depending on the look you are going for. I normally like to apply this over a typical brown eyeshadow to add a little shimmery effect and let me tell you, it takes neutrals to the next level! Each color can be used as an eyeliner as well. I personally like to line my eyes with my regular eyeliner first then top it with d'Ombre for subtle shimmers along the lash line.
I find that the best method to apply these shadows is to use the included brush! No joke. It works exceptionally well for what it's made for. But I only use it to pack the color on, though, and on well below the crease. Apply a thin layer first and then build up the intensity if desired. Then I use a small fluffy brush such as MAC 217 to blend out the sharp edges for smokey effect. I tried using my fingertip to smudge out but that didn't turn out so good. It can get really messy with fingers if you are not careful so I'd advise you stick with a brush to blend.
The longevity is excellent! Especially with a little help of an eye primer. These shadows just last and last on my lids and they do not require touch-ups! They truly stay the entire day (or night) without smudging or migrating. There is one downside, though. These shadows seem to dry out really fast. Over time (I've had these for more than a year now) they will harden and shrink and the texture may become a little bit crumbly. Definitely make it a priority to keep the lid tightly sealed when you are done using.
All three in comparison
While these 3 colors are permanent, Chanel has been releasing limited edition shades as well for each season. And have you seen the Holiday 2013 shades?! They are absolutely gorgeous especially Fatal! It has my name all over it so I might just have to… you know… check it out. :)
