Good highlighters are hard to find especially the ones that impart skin's natural radiance without accentuating imperfections, and without large shimmer or chunks of glitter. Dior Diorskin Ultra-Shimmering All Over Face Powder is one of those products that has proved itself to be worthy of all praise. Its multi-use and the ability to give you a flawless glow makes it one of my all-time favorite highlighters I always come back for.
Firstly, we will start off with the superficial! :) The box the powder comes in is a basic glossy navy blue but the powder itself is packaged in a glossy (hello fingerprints), blackened midnight blue hard plastic case with silver Dior imprinted in the center of the lid. When you turn the case a certain way to reflect light, you will see this holographic blue CD in the background, too – something I find to be very Dior, very classy. The case is a little thick but feels durable and lightweight. A small black velvet pouch is included to protect the shiny case from scratches when you travel with it (but it collects dust like anything else!). The applicator is not included but you do get a good-sized mirror inside.
The powder itself has a quilted pattern with again Dior impression in the lower right corner. The colors of the powder are separated into 5 stripes, each with varying width. I purchased both 001 Rose Diamond and 002 Amber Diamond which are the only 2 shades available in the US market (I believe there are more shades offered in Asia).
Colors from left to right:
- 001 Rose Diamond – Pearl | Pink | Mauve | Soft Plum | Pink
- 002 Amber Diamond – Ivory | Champagne | Tan | Bronze | Peach
Now, let's talk about substance! :)
The pearlescent powder is extremely finely-milled with a really soft and blendable texture. It glides on really beautifully without any chunks of glitter or shimmer. It has a fairly good pigmentation for a highlighter but the “pink” (for 001 Rose Diamond) or “bronze” (for 002 Amber Diamond) color will not show up unnaturally-looking on the skin even when you pile the product on. It's really difficult to go overboard so you don't need to be overly cautious when applying. The powder may look overly shimmery in the pan or when swatched with fingertips but it is completely different once applied on the skin. I typically use a small less dense brush such as MAC 109, 130, or 159 to lightly apply the powder on my cheekbones or a fan brush for all over the face. I personally like to apply a thin layer but you can definitely build up to achieve a more dramatic sheen.
When I first used this powder, I was a bit disappointed when I looked in the mirror after application because I couldn't see it doing anything to my complexion! Then just as I got up and stepped further away from the mirror, I saw it! The soft, diffused healthy glow that everyone was talking about! It sounds like an exaggeration but you have to see it for yourself. The subtle glow is simply flawless without being too obvious.
The better part is it doesn't seem to accentuate my oily skin nor does it emphasize any pores and fine lines (because you know, most highlighters do that). Just the right amount of soft-focus luminous sheen that really adds dimension back to my face.
And the best part? It is a multitasking product! Besides using all the colors swirled together as a highlighter, you can also use each color separately for different tasks. For example, you can use the lightest shades from the left hand side to highlight the brow bone, inner corners, on the bridge of your nose, or on Cupid's bow and then use the darker shades on the right side as a blush or highlighter. Or you can use each color individually as an eyeshadow color too! See, it isn't just a highlighter. :)
001 Rose Diamond
002 Amber Diamond
My favorite of the two has to be 002 Amber Diamond since its warm, golden sheen seems to blend more seamlessly with my medium skin with yellow undertone. It also seems to be a more universally-flattering shade between the two because warm gold is a safe color that looks good on anyone.
However, if you are pale, 001 Rose Diamond should look lovely just as well on you because the pink sheen will show up a little more. It unfortunately looks a little stark against my skin coloring so I only make sure to apply the lightest layer of application.
A little pricey item, yes but one that would last you a very long time. I've used mine consistently for a year now and the quilted pattern is still intact as shown in the photos above! It's definitely and investment but one that you will not regret. :)
