January 2015 Favorites

Whoops! It's the last day of the first month of 2015 already! I wonder if you are still keeping your new year's resolutions? I know I am! Smile more, laugh more, drink more water and less Starbucks' Frappucino, I've been doing just that! :) This month's favorites include some new and rediscovered items that I think are worth checking out. Let's take a look!

Tom Ford Lips & Boys Lip Colors in Michael and Jack

Lips & Boys is the lipstick collection everyone has been talking about left and right this winter! It caused quite a frenzy all across the blogosphere when the collection officially launched in late November. Among the colors I was able to get my hands on, Jack remains my favorite! A medium magenta pink with a purple tinge — so my color! :) The formula is top-notch, too. Creamy, opaque, and oh-so-smooth. As for Michael, I love the color, but not so much the texture. Though I have found that applying the MAC Prep + Prime Lip (see #5) as a base underneath it helps with the under performing issue considerably! See my review of Michael and Jack here and Alexander, Preston, Justin, and Pablo here.

Chanel Jardin de Chanel Blush Camélia Rosé

New for Spring 2015, Chanel Camélia Rosé is a two-toned blush comprising of a darker, warmer mauve rose and a lighter, cooler muted pale pink. Although the size and pigmentation of the blush may raise some eyebrows, you can't deny the fact that it has one of the most beautiful floral designs we've ever seen on a makeup product. I like Camélia Rosé for its soft pink color with a satiny glow and for its ease of use. It's one of those blushes that doesn't require strategic planning or careful consideration whether it will match with the rest of your makeup. It's a total fool-proof color that will compliment any makeup look. See my review of Camélia Rosé here.

Burberry Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base

I have been using the Burberry Fresh Glow more religiously again this winter to perk up my dull skin! It is a liquid illuminizer in frosty, pearly champagne beige color with lots and lots of ultra fine shimmer. You can use it alone or mix it with your moisturizer or base product for an extra dose of fresh glow on the skin. The name couldn't be more fitting since that is exactly what I see on my skin when I use this product — a fresh glow. Although it contains a ridiculous amount of shimmer, you won't detect it once it is applied on the face. The effect is so subtle that even if you are shimmer-phobic, you will still appreciate it! See my review including the before-and-after photo of Fresh Glow here.

MAC Prep + Prime Lip

MAC Prep + Prime Lip is basically a lip balm with extra benefits! It feels balmy like a lip balm, it looks white and waxy (but goes on clear) like a lip balm, and it also adds hydration and moisturization just like a lip balm! But what it does more is it helps improve the appearance of applied lip products by providing a “tacky” base on your lips so that your lip color has something to grab on to, which in turns results in a smoother and more even application of your lip color. The added bonus is that it seems to help extend the wear time of the lip product, too! It is compatible with any formulation of lip color be it matte, cream, or liquid. For proof, see my swatches here where I compared side-by-side a lip color applied on bare skin versus over the Prep + Prime Lip!

Hourglass Infinity Modernist Eyeshadow Palette

The new Hourglass Modernist Eyeshadow Palettes have been receiving such mixed reviews for sure! I picked up Infinity which is a combination of neutral colors in a mix of shimmery and matte finishes. My experience with it has been generally positive. I love the crazy pigmentation, the super soft and blendable texture, the all-day wear time, and of course, the stunning display of harmonious colors without boundaries! ;) I think the major issue most people have with the shadows is that they can kick up quite a powdery mess since they are so soft and finely-milled and the fact that there are no dividers between the colors, the powder kick up is going to fall into the adjacent colors and eventually creating a color mash-up. It's unavoidable with a design like this but you can certainly work around it by being gentle when picking up the pigment and tapping the palette upside down to remove any fallout when you're done. I have a more detailed review of the palette right here.

Well, I hope you liked my picks this month! Please don't forget to share with me your January favorites in the comment section below! Are you looking forward to February? I know I am since, well, Valentine's Day is one of my favorite (and super special) days of the year because my boyfriend and I met for the first time! Awww, so cheesy haha! I don't know why, but talking about my personal stuff on the blog really makes me feel uncomfortable! ^_^”

I’ve been wanting to try the hourglass eyeshadows, especially exposure, but I think I’ll wait until I swatch it myself. I did get the tf chocolate bar palette and I can’t wait for it to arrive!

    1. says: Jaa

Yeah, considering all the mixed review, I think it’s best to swatch the Hourglass palettes in person first! Let me know how you like the Chocolate Bar! :)

So sweet you two met on Valentines Day! It’s also my sisters birthday :D
I love the hourglass palette, these last few days i’ve been trying the Guerlain Baby Glow, and I can’t figure out if I like it! I love the glow, but my NC15 skin is too pale, and too yellow, so I had to add some G.A. Luminous Glow to fix it. I’m trying to decide if the Guerlain gives a nice enough glow to buy a tube,or if it’s simply not worth it.

Oh nice! Please tell her I said Happy Birthday in advance!! :D How do you like the consistency of the Guerlain Baby Glow? Is it similar to the BB Cream? I love the name so much but I think I should do a thorough research before I splurge. The shade range is pretty limited, too, right?

      1. says: brenda

Thank you, i’ll tell her!! The consistency is nice almost same as Lingerie de Peau BB, bit thinner, it give you a layer of glow with a little bit of colour and a little bit of coverage, it will not cover red spots very well, for example. If you look very very closely in the mirror with a lot of light, you can spot tiny glitters, just a little bit. Same like when you apply normal meteorites!

        1. says: Jaa

That’s great! I find the BB cream a little too thick for my skin right now so this might be a better option! I’m all for glowy complexion anyway! Have you tried the new NARS foundation? I’m super duper curious about that one!

Beautiful picks, I am still lusting after that Chanel blush!

I like Valentine’s Day although I know it’s cheesy but me and my husband always go out to a nice dinner and I can dress up :-) And once February ends, we are so much closer to spring!

    1. says: Jaa

That’s the fun part! Dressing up for dinner! :D I need to do that more often, lol. And after Spring, it’s SUMMER!!!! Hehehe my favorite season. :)

  4. says: Sunny

Hey Jaa, aww that’s so cute! Meeting the boyfriend on Valentine’s Day :)

I got Color Field and I’m going to give it a proper go next week. I’m hoping I’ll like it. It does swatch well tho, or at least 4 out of the 5 shades do!

    1. says: Jaa

Let me guess, you don’t like the matte! ;D I will keep my eyes peeled for your review ‘cos you know I have my eyes on the Color Field as well! :)

  5. says: Xuvious

I’m very surprised about the mixed reviews for Modernist as well. I actually like the idea of swirling adjacent colours together to get custom ones. But overall, lovely picks! ^_^

    1. says: Jaa

Thank you! Yeah, I’m surprised at all the mixed reviews as well! I thought for sure they were going to be everyone’s favorite! :)

  6. says: Audrey

I’ve been eyeing that Burberry base for quite some time now. I wish there was somewhere where I could try it out in person, but there are no counters anywhere near me. Lovely choices, Jaa! That MAC Prep + Prime sounds especially interesting.

    1. says: Jaa

I don’t like it, either, when I see something that I *think* I like and want to try it in person first but there’s no counter near me! Thanks Nordstrom and Sephora for having good return policies! :) MAC Prep + Prime is my new eye primer buddy! :D

  7. says: Dee

ooooooh aaaaaah ! Beautiful picks! I only have the Prep&Prime out of these and I do love it!! Im exactly the same way about sharing “personal” stuff on my blog Jaa so I can relate:) But regardless…that IS cute lol. I think if everyone actually thought about how the internet works and how much can be done with the information thats just floating around freely in hyperspace accessible to billions of people..there’ll definitely be less sharing of personal info lol.

    1. says: Jaa

Yeah, I’m always careful about what I share on the internet. You just never know! :) I like hearing about you and your husband training together, though. LOL

  8. says: Lily

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with sharing some personal info, Jaa. I think throwing bits and pieces of personal info makes the person behind the blog more relatable instead of just another blogger / reviewer, you know? But of course, there are some who’d totally freak out and get paranoid, so to each her own. I’d love to try the Modernist palette in Graphite, but the mixed reviews stop me from purchasing. The palettes are too expensive and buying it sight unseen is a huge risk.

    1. says: Jaa

I don’t think I am paranoid per se… I think it’s more along the line of “who cares about my personal stuff, they are here to read makeup reviews”. LOL. It’s just too bad that the Hourglass palettes are getting mixed reviews. I personally really like them and am really surprised some don’t. :-/

  9. Nothing wrong with writing personal things on your blog. I actually love reading about the blogger, makes me feel like I’m getting to know the person behind the blog. Love your picks, I’ve been dying to get Hourglass Infinity Modernist Eyeshadow Palette but it’s not out in Australia yet and it’s going to be crazy expensive.
