I may or may not have acquired the new MAC Huggable Lipcolour because of the word “huggable“! :D
The new and limited edition MAC Huggable Lipcolour is a gel-based lipstick with a formula that is “inspired by Asian trends” (think bright hues and high sheen). The collection features a 6-hour wear time and a bright and luminous color with a glossy finish. There are 14 shades total, 2 being Asia-exclusive. I picked up What A Feeling!, a blue-based cool pink, and Fresh & Frisky, a bright peachy coral, both of which are in the lighter shades of the color spectrum.
The Huggables' packaging is a sleek, shiny tube with metallic gunmetal finish. The lipstick itself has a flat, wide, and slanted tip that I find a little inconvenient to get to the Cupid's Bow. It has the same sweet vanilla scent typical to most MAC lipsticks which I really like and don't think I'll ever grow tired of. :)
To me, the formula feels like a hybrid of a really rich conditioning lip balm and a sheer to medium coverage lipstick. When applied, it really does feel like it is hugging your lips. It sounds odd but that's exactly what came to my mind when I first wore it. In a general beauty term, I would translate it into being “clingy” which can be a good thing because it means no slip and slide. It does apply with a little bit of tugging initially but quickly becomes smoother and softer once the texture warms up to the lips. It also leaves a slightly tacky finish with a lovely glossy sheen. I specifically love how it makes my lips feel soft, plump, and generally look fuller which is always a plus in my book!
The two shades I picked up unfortunately do settle into fine lines, only a little but still noticeable if you look closely. They also accentuate flaky patches and dry areas on the lips which I wasn't expecting at all considering the thick balmy texture, so exfoliated/well-prepped lips will prove helpful. With one layer on, the color is slightly sheer and it actually does feel lightweight and pretty comfortable on but when layered (to build the intensity), it can become slightly heavy and I can definitely feel it just sitting on my lips. My suggestion would be to apply it over a lip liner so that you don't need to pack on too much, or apply, blot off the waxy excess, reapply, and repeat until the desired intensity is reached.
In terms of longevity, I find it rather short-lived, right around 3 hours max and from there on starts to fade really quickly. Definitely not 6 hours as advertised, at least not on my lips. Reapplication is easy and mess-free, though, and you can probably do so without a mirror, as long as your lips are still conditioned and not all dried out.
What A Feeling!
Fresh & Frisky
Overall, I find MAC Huggable Lipcolour to be a good lipstick to use on days when you know you will be out for a short few hours. I really do like the conditioning formula and the coverage of the colors I have but I wish the wear time was a little better. My review here is based on the lighter shades and I honestly do not know if the darker shades would perform any differently. I suppose one way to find out is… to try them! I'm actually starting to like the swatches of Feeling Amorous (fuchsia) and Commotion (plum) more and more… well, we shall see! :)
What's your favorite Huggable shade? :)
