Yet another awesome product from Maybelline! This one I'm actually really excited about! In fact, I'm already thinking of collecting all 20 shades of them…
The new Color Elixir by Color Sensational from Maybelline promises “the bold color of a lipstick, the cushiony care of a balm, and the glass shine of a gloss”. It's a rare occurrence that a company's claim of their product is true but this one I have to say is right on! The Color Elixir is just that – a hybrid of lipstick, lip balm, and lip gloss in one. I picked up 3 colors to try out the formula and wow, I am truly loving everything about it!
Even the packaging I love! Chubby (but short) plastic square tube with a shiny silver twist-off cap. The cap closes with a secure click so it is safe for travel. The tube is transparent and inside is another layer of colored-plastic shaped like a lipstick that coordinates with the color of the product inside. The second layer isn't transparent, though. It is completely opaque but the color is true to the actual lip color. The soft, doe-foot applicator is attached to the cap and has a tear-drop shape that conforms really nicely to the shape of the lips making the application really easy and precise. It is slightly curved and pointy at the tip to reach the Cupid's bow and inner corners and slightly flat and wider at the body to easily fill in the color. Not really crazy about the silver top as it collects fingerprints like crazy (OCD much?) but the overall look of the packaging is quite cute, nonetheless. I detected a faint sweet scent that is quite pleasant but it does vanish fairly quickly.
The 3 colors I picked up are:
- 005 Breathtaking Apricot – bright coral
- 040 Vision in Violet – bright violet
- 085 Hibiscus Haven – bright pink
Lip balm aspect:
The first application left me clueless and struggling to come up with a description because the formula wasn't like anything I've felt before! It felt to me like a really thick and creamy lip balm that has been melted! When I first bought them I didn't even know they were categorized as a “liquid lip balm” so their name is again, totally right on. It really is a liquid lip balm. And due to the balmy texture, I find that it glides on smoothly and evenly on the lips. Absolutely no patchiness or tugging/pulling sensation. The thick consistency doesn't feel heavy at all but by no means is it completely weightless. I actually find it to be very moisturizing and such a comfort to wear.
Lip color aspect:
Onto the color payoff. It is amazing. Especially the 3 shades that I bought. The color is buildable – it doesn't go on fully opaque on the first swipe and you may need a second layer to reach the full opacity. I have quite pigmented lips to begin with so I was a little disappointed to see that the color didn't appear as bold as I'd have liked when I first put it on. However, when I coated my lips with a thin layer of my favorite lip base first, and followed with the Elixir, then I could actually see its true color on my lips! So a word of advice, if you have pigmented lips too, invest in a good lip base that would neutralize your natural lip color first. It will totally change the whole lipstick experience for you.
Lip gloss aspect:
This thing is glossy! It literally has the shine of a lip gloss! I don't think you'd need another layer of a separate lip gloss with this. And the good thing is it isn't sticky (oh how I love lip glosses that aren't sticky…)! It is very emollient and does leave lips looking healthy and feeling hydrated. However, as with most lip glosses, the shine does wear off within a couple of hours and at this point the staining effect of the lip color will become apparent. I like how the color stays put even without the shiny top coat. And it is the type of staining effect that does not leave your lips feeling parched, either. My lips still feel decently soft and moisturized the rest of the day. I didn't notice any bleeding or feathering out of the lip line with these Elixirs which is another plus.
I suppose the number one thing I love most about these Elixirs is the perfect combination of the insanely “balmy” feeling and the intense color pigmentation. I really wanna give a big hug to whoever came up with this formula! Especially now that we are headed into the cold Winter where I live, I'm already seeing myself reaching for these Elixirs a lot more than my other lip products. If you have dry lips, I think you really should check these out.

I am already planning to pick up more shades. I'm especially curious now how nudes would perform. Would it be as saturated as the bold colors? I'll make sure to put up more swatches if I do purchase more colors. They come in a whopping 20 vivid shades (some of them are pretty close to each other), there's sure to be a color for every personality. Good thing is, these are permanent! So you have time to collect. :) Overall, another great invention from Maybelline and one that's worth indulging in!
