NARS Audacious Lipstick in Juliette Review & Swatches

Last month NARS celebrated their 20th Anniversary by releasing 40 shades of their new lipstick line called Audacious Lipstick. I don't know about you but I was blown away and also overwhelmed with the selection! I was already a fan of their previous lipstick formulas but the new Audacious newness looks even more delicious! Want to know what color I picked up? Then please read on! Hint: it's not pink! ;D

Finally a revamped packaging! No more rubberized texture! Who else is happy?! :D Audacious lipsticks come in this masculine all-black metallic casing that closes with a satisfying magnetic closure. The brand's logo is printed on the bottom of the packaging and is also engraved on the actual lipstick inside. The lipstick has no taste or smell that I am aware of.

And here it is! Ta da! Meet Juliette! ^_^

Juliette is described as a pink coral but on my lips it is a super bright, almost fluorescent coral! I'm not going to lie, at first swipe I was a little bit taken aback! Judging from the tube, I thought the color was going to be muted coral but in real life, there's nothing muted about Juliette at all! The shade has some ultra fine shimmer, too, but it's more noticeable on the lips than in the tube.

To make the color more wearable for office work, I usually just dab the lipstick on the center part of my lips and then spread and sheer out with a clean finger or lip brush. Juliette goes on opaque in one swipe and is layerable. The more you layer, the brighter fluorescent it becomes! I detect a soft sheen in the beginning of wear, too, but it vanishes within a couple of hours.

In terms of consistency, this is one creamy and richly pigmented lipstick! The lightweight formula glides on smoothly without skipping or dragging. However, your lips have to be in the most perfect condition for this lipstick to apply smoothly otherwise it will catch on dry flakes and accentuate them. It doesn't settle into lip lines, though.

Normally in summer, I can get away with just a regular lip balm underneath my lipstick but for Juliette, I find myself needing the help from the thick formula of the Bite Agave Lip Mask to keep my lips well hydrated throughout the day.

Juliette may feel comfortable and a bit moisturizing during initial wear but I notice my lips become slightly drying after the color starts to wear off, which is after 3-4 hours. It does leave a soft stain on the lips but my problem with the color is it doesn't seem to fade “evenly”. At the end of the day, my lips look kind of dry and noticeably blotchy when inspected up-close. Always keep a lip balm handy to re-texturize when wearing this lipstick!

The many faces of Jaa!

I believe Sephora only carries 30 shades, the other 10 shades are exclusive to Barneys and NARS Cosmetics. If I decide to purchase another color, it would probably be in the nude category. My beautiful blog friend Carolyn has some lovely swatches of Barbara and Brigitte right here if you are interested to see what they look like!

Are you planning to pick up Audacious Lipsticks? What color(s) are you drawn to the most?

  • Jaa, you are the sweetest <3!! Thank you so much for the kind shout-out! I think Juliette looks beautiful and so flattering on you. I hear you though about needing to apply just a little bit and then spread it out with your finger. These are all so ultra-pigmented! Like you, I also apply a layer of Bite Beauty Lip Mask underneath (thanks again for the great review on this back then — this has been my HG lip balm that I use everyday!) to ensure it wears better. You mentioned maybe being interested in a nude — I picked up Raquel recently and really like it for a good nude that doesn't wash me out! :)

    • My pleasure, Carolyn! ❤ I know I should have linked to your blog more often but sometimes I just forget! ^_^ I’m always too eager to click that Publish button as soon as I finish my post. Haha.

Raquel is such a pretty nude!! But I think my heart is set on Anna for my next color. :D

      • No, no, Jaa, you are really the sweetest/most thoughtful and have linked to me already so much — I’m so appreciative! Ooh, Anna, huh? I’ve heard really good things about Anna on Specktra actually. Do you think you will pick it up?! If so, can’t wait to see what you think of it!

  • I like this shade on you! I haven’t checked these out yet, but I saw the online swatches and I’m drawn to the vampy berry shades. Need to have a look soon :-)

  • Jaa,
This is a beautiful shade on you! I find corals to be quite complimentary to Asian skin tones, and this one is no exception. I really do love the packaging! I find that my lips are much to dry to handle most lipsticks, so I’ll probably skip on this one since it’s (although only a little) drying.

  • Hahaha I love these photos of you! I still can’t decide if I’ll give one of these a go or not. I think I’ll wait till I can swatch them in real life. I am not too sure about the drying aspect though. I just think there are too many great formulas out there to put up with something that I need a lip balm for! However, Juliette is most probably my color so I might have to reconsider ;)

  • Hehe. I like the ‘Seductive sorceress’ look in the middle of your many faces picture. I bet you charm all the paladins that way, eh Jaa?

I think this lipstick (whichever way you’re doing the application for those full face photos) is a really gorgeous colour for your skintone! LOL, if it’s ‘fluorescent’ on you I can only imagine I’d burn people’s retinas off with it.

    *SIZZLE*

There are a couple of shades from this range that I’d rather like to swatch if/when the line comes here – I’d give you their names, but with 40 shades I’ve kindof forgotten them… ;-P

    • Haha funny! ;D

I applied it with my finger for a sheerer finish. That’s why it didn’t appear so bright! :D

What kind of shades are you looking forward to trying? Something red? Something vampy? ;D

      • I think Vivien and Audrey were the two that ended up catching my eye the most – the sort of muted pink/mauve/berry colours! All the reds seemed very warm to me, and the the vampy Liv is a nice colour but seemed kind of patchy in peoples’ swatches, sadly.

I like a lot of the brighter pinks and corals, but I think they would be VERY BRIGHT on me. I don’t actually mind that per se, but I’m kind of on the look out for lipsticks that I can wear everyday in the lab, LOL!

        • Ahh.. .don’t you just hate that…. -___-” What we should and should not wear… Academics is a strange environment lol.

  • “Only 30 ” shades lol . Yes..what will we ever do with only 30 shades!! I had a tough time choosing. I swatched everything and didnt get anything finally!…i was able to find fault with or a dupe for everything so I really fought hard NOT to buy anything from this line lol. I loved Anna but I have dupes for that ..couldnt justify 37$ CAD on it! Juliette is pretttyyyy Jaa. I did eye this a couple of times too ( along with Audrey ..ah darn along with every other colour they had). I like that it makes your lips look all full and…oooh…aah lol ( nice first pic btw…i felt I was playing find the hidden lipstick:p)

    • I was about to pick up Anna! What are some dupes you can think of, Dee? Tell me so I can save some $$$, too! But then again, I know myself. I will eventually fork out another $32 to get it. LOL.

  • Juliette is so pretty on you!
I honestly think 40 different shades are a bit of an overkill and can’t help but think I’m paying more bucks for a heavier lipstick case which I’m not a fan of.
Having said all that, I still might pick up a deep berry shade like Audrey.
From you swatch, I can certainly tell how creamy and delicious the formula is. :)

    • Hey Lena! Thanks! :) I understand what you mean. Some shades are really really close to each other so I think it’s not necessary to pick more than one from each color family. I really want to try the nude or pink, though, so I may end up buying one more shade. :)

  • Juliette suits you so well! So far I only have Raquel but there are several others I’m eyeing. The only reason I didn’t pick up Juliette was because I just got Tom Ford’s Twist of Fate and thought perhaps they’d be too similar? Comparing your swatches of the two, it looks like they are similar but Juliette is significantly brighter! Both are beautiful shades :)

  • That is quite a nice coral. I like that it’s not too orange! Looks great and I bet it would be really super with that blue liner you just got!

  • What gorgeous photos!! Goodness! I was swooning!
I love Juliette on you, but I would have been scared at first, too, LOL! I definitely want to try one of these but I haven’t narrowed it down to a winner yet!

  • LOVELY! I love the many faces of Jaa!! :)
This is a shade right up my alley, reminds me of Lodhi (satin lip pencil) :)
Can’t wait to pick up a shade or two!

AND YASSSS, no more rubber packaging!!

  • I discovered your blog a few months ago and absolutely love it! I can’t wait to visit NARS (there’s only one store in Malaysia) to check out the Audacious collection. Juliette looks great on you!

  • I was keen on a few shades like Liv and Audrey before the release and now I’m feeling generally underwhelmed by these lipsticks. It’s nice that the packaging was upgraded but I feel like it was an excuse to just amp up the price too. At almost $40 here, I’d rather go with Armani instead.

    • Yeah…. releasing too many colors can be good and bad. Good there’s a lot to choose from but bad because now I don’t know which to choose!! Haha.
