NARS Orgasm Lip Gloss Review & Swatches

NARS has reformulated their entire range of lip gloss this summer and I couldn't be happier! I've always wanted to try their glosses but found the old formula to be too sticky and have an off-putting, chemical smell. The new revamped formula, however, is da bomb! In fact, it is so good and I love it so much that I have been wearing it non-stop since I received it a couple of weeks ago! :D

Shown above is a mini size of Orgasm, a peachy pink base with lots and lots of gold shimmer. Looks like a lovely shade right? But the truth is I wasn't wowed by it at all at first swatch (I'm not a big fan of shimmery finish on my lips). I wore it the next day anyway, hoping to at least try the new formula, and that's when I realized for the first time how gorgeous Orgasm really is — the way those gold flecks reflect light, it's almost magical! ^_^

So, what's different about the new formula, let's see…

Packaging & color selection

The packaging has been revamped as well. The new glosses now come in a transparent tube so you can see right inside the color and finish of the gloss. The applicator is a traditional doe-foot that is easy to use and precise. The new lineup has a total of 30 shades, 7 are new and the rest are old shades. There are also different finishes — clear/jelly-like, shimmery, metallic, and creamy. Impressive range!

Formula

Yup! There is no more of that awful chemical smell in the new formula! The level of stickiness has also been reduced substantially. It is still sticky but no where near as bad as it was before. I think they got it right this time by formulating a perfect balance of stickiness (for staying power) and spreadability. (Is there such a word? Ha ha!)

Per NARS' website, the new gloss is “enriched with Vitamin E to help lips feel supple and hydrated”. Well, I do think that Orgasm is pretty comfortable to wear (despite the sky-high shimmer content); it's not that extraordinarily hydrating or anything but what I appreciate is the fact that it doesn't dry out my lips once it has worn off.

Now, let's get back to Orgasm!

Besides the prettiest gold sparkles, I also love how it just transforms my lips, making them look extra luscious as well as fuller and more plump! The shine is almost mirror-like although it doesn't last very long (fades within a few hours on a normal day).

There are two ways to wear Orgasm:

  1. Wear alone for a subtle shimmery effect, or
  2. (my favorite way) Layer over a lipstick to create depth and dimension. Seriously, I feel like Orgasm makes any lipstick I wear underneath look a hundred times better! :)

I do think that Orgasm is a stunning shade for a lip gloss. It is the kind of color that suits and flatters every skin tone. The new formula may not be revolutionary but it sure is noteworthy. I am beyond satisfied with the improvement and already looking to buy more shades. My problem right now is, I don't know which one I should get! There are just so many to choose from! Maybe the shocking pink Priscilla? Let me know if you have a color recommendation! :)

  • Eek! That is a LOT of shimmer you got there! I’m not sure I like that… No, I don’t think I do. Sorry Jaa :-( I just don’t do shimmer very well I guess.

    • Ha ha yeah it is loaded with shimmer. I didn’t expect to like it this much at all but somehow I love the effect of this one!

  • Hey Jaa! I have orgasm lip gloss in the original formula and have hardly worn it. The shimmer was just too much and the gloopiness! I will definitely try some colours in the new ones though! Im eyeing belize! any other I should try!? :-)

  • I love it with the lipstick underneath.. and your camera must be super amazing, because wow.. those pictures are insanely zoomed in and super beautiful!

    • Same here, Natasja. It looks a hundred times better over a lipstick! :)

Thanks for the compliment on the photos! I’m glad you enjoyed the close-up! :D

  • This one is beautiful! I was literally clapping when they reformulated the glosses and I was in lurve as soon as I got one! I love your use of the word “spreadability”! Totally perfect, and you’re right – they don’t dry out the lips after they’re gone which is fabulous. I am in love with Salamanca, Eternal Red (both are jellies without shimmer), and Angelika – I think you would love this one. It’s a cool toned pink with some shimmer (not as much as O) that’s similar to Priscilla but less pigmented. They ALL look gorgeous though! I also have Risky Business, the one that started it all for me back in the old packaging and weird scent days, and Misbehave, a shimmery red. They’re seriously ALL amazing. I love the reformulation! I wish they had a purple one! :D Maybe for Fall/Winter, they’ll release one!

    • Angelika is on my list, Kristen!!! Sooo pretty! Priscilla is nice but maybe little too strong for me. :-/

Purple? Années Folles from the Spring 2014 collection is a purple! It’s very sheer, though. :)

      • That’s what I was thinking. Though I think you could pull off any lip color, but it comes down to what you feel most comfortable wearing and I know you tend to favor less “in yo face” shades!

And yes! Annees Folles! I hope NARS will release a similar color in the regular lip gloss line. The Larger Than Life glosses are allegedly sticky and come with a brush applicator instead of my personal fave, the doe foot. I was SO close to buying Annees Folles and Bimini after seeing them on The Beauty Look Book!
