So the other item I bought along with the illuminator from the NARS Final Cut collection is the Satin Lip Pencil in Villa Lante! There are 4 lip pencils in this collection and it was hard for me to pick only one. I went with Villa Lante because if I were to choose between pink and coral, well, pink always wins. :D And between the two pinks – Villa Lante and Stourhead – I had to go with Villa Lante because I find Stourhead a little too pale for my complexion. Now, let's get right to the review! :)
I'd never guess that Villa Lante is a cool-toned pink! The color looks rather warm on the pencil and on arm swatches but when applied on my lips, it turns into this sort of bright, cool-toned, almost Barbie pink! I was a little surprised (and slightly disappointed) because I really wanted this to be the exact same pink I saw on the pencil. It looks a little stark against my complexion on its own, however, when layered over a warmer pink lip liner, or topped with a lip gloss, it then becomes more wearable.
So, this is one of those colors best swatched on the lips before buying because what you see on the pencil may not translate to the right color it is meant to be on the lips, especially if you have naturally pigmented lips like I do or have similar complexion color.
As for the formula, it is pretty much the same formula as the other Satin Lip Pencils – creamy, glides on smoothly, and doesn't tug or pull at all. It has quite a bit of slip in the texture that may move the color underneath when you are layering so what I do is, I apply one coat (or two), blot, apply more, and repeat until I reach the desired intensity.
Since the coverage is not fully opaque, one layer may be sufficient for a sheer to medium finish. But for me, I like to layer it a little bit so my natural lip color doesn't come through too much. It leaves a satin finish with a hint of soft shine, but the color sets to a matte once the shine vanishes.
The wear time is of average, I'd say I start to see some fading at the 3 hour mark if I wear it on bare lips. Contrary to the other Satin Lip Pencils that I have, Villa Lante doesn't stain my lips at all – well, it wasn't expected to anyway since it's such a light pink color.
The bad part of being a light color and creamy is, it highlights flaky areas on the lips and settle into lip lines! So be sure to follow with a lip brush or clean finger to even out the color. Or use a lip primer (or lip pencil) to help fill in fine lines and smooths out the texture of the lips before the application. A lip primer will lengthen the wear time, too!
It is neither drying or moisturizing when firstly applied but as the day goes on and the color starts wearing off, you will experience a little dryness, so take the pencil with you for touch-ups, or coat your lips with a lip balm to keep lips hydrated throughout the day.
I think Villa Lante is a nice-to-have rather than a must-have. I wish it pulled a little warmer and stayed on a little longer on me but there's nothing a lip primer/liner can't fix! :) I have a feeling, though, that the other two coral/peachy shades will perform a little better, especially Descanso (which I should have picked up instead!) which would also suit my complexion better. Oh well, it's hard to pick something else over pink sometimes! :)
Are you getting anything from the Final Cut collection? :)
