I've heard about these new Matte Balms by Revlon for a while but never really thought of picking them up until my recent trip to Bed Bath & Beyond that I actually saw them in person and wow, what a pretty, pretty sight they were! I have to say it's the matte packaging that caught my attention. The next thing I knew I was already picking away the lovely shades I wanted to bring home with. See, the packaging always gets me, every time!
The packaging of the new Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balms is almost identical to the original Just Bitten Kissable Lip Balm Stains except these Matte ones come in a matte packaging to reflect the texture of the lip color inside. It's a very smooth kind of matte, not rubbery, and does not attract dust. They also have a similar sweet minty scent (that I love) with a slightly cooling effect on the lips (that I don't really care for). They are your basic retractable jumbo lip crayons that do not require sharpening (thus no sharpener included). To avoid the tip getting dull after multiple uses, try to fill in the color on the lips using the side of the tip and only use the pointy tip to line to keep it fairly sharp. The color of the packaging is quite true to the color of the lipstick inside, at least for the 4 colors that I picked up which are:
- 215 Shameless – deep purple
- 220 Showy – bubblegum pink
- 235 Mischievous – light peach
- 245 Audacious – bright, almost neon coral
These Matte Balms are the newest addition to the ColorBurst line and their crazy pigmentation is what sets them apart from other matte lip colors. What really surprised me the most, though is how ridiculously soft they are! They are so soft, creamy, and extremely lightweight. The application is really a breeze and I don't feel like I'm wearing a matte lipstick at all. The consistency feels thin on the lips but it packs a punch of color in one pass (if that makes sense?). They glide on smoothly with absolutely no tugging or dragging and leave a velvety-matte finish (as opposed to completely matte) that feels very comfortable and not at all heavy or drying. They are not in anyway moisturizing but they are quite hydrating for a matte lipstick.
The key to achieve the best application though, is well-prepped lips. It is a must, must, must. Especially for the lighter color such as 235 Mischievous (peach) which literally highlights my dry patches that I didn't even know I had! It also settles into lip lines (you will see in the lip swatch below) and accentuates flaky bits and basically any imperfection. 220 Showy (pink) applies a bit better and my lips don't look so dried out but it's still a little streaky. 215 Shameless (purple) is a gorgeous and fun color (it was the first color I grabbed!), and while the application isn't as terrible, I find the coverage is a little blotchy and you will need more than one swipe to get even distribution of the color. 245 Audacious (neon coral) applies the best and is my most favorite in terms of consistency – it's the most creamy and hydrating, so much so that you can probably get away without exfoliating your lips beforehand. I find all 4 colors to build very easily with each swipe and they don't seem to push around the color of the first layer, so that's a plus.
They, however, apply so much better over a lip base or lip liner which will also help extend the wear time. By itself, these Matte Balms last roughly 4-5 hours with minimal drinking and eating but over a lip base, the color easily lasts the entire day. The good thing about them is once they dry down, they won't leave lips feeling parched or uncomfortable. My lips still feel reasonably soft and hydrating the rest of the day but if you experience dryness, apply a thin layer of lip balm or lip gloss on top to help ease the issue.
They may appear to look identical to the Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains but they do not in any way have the same staining power (well, they are not called “stains” to begin with but I just thought I'd throw in this little piece of information for inquiring minds). They stain just a tiny, tiny bit. It's very subtle but it's noticeable nonetheless (see swatches below).
Swatches of all 4 colors for comparison
With a whole range of colors to choose from, from light nudes, to medium pinks, reds, and bold purples, I think you will find something that suits you. They also come in lacquer forms as well but I didn't pick those up (just yet) as I've been mostly drawn to matte lips lately. I don't think these are limited edition so pick up a color that you think you'll get the most use out of first and if you like the formula, you can always buy more. I'm actually thinking of picking up the medium rose pink color (205 Elusive) that I missed out – it looks to be a perfect MLBB color that would go well with any makeup look.
Have you tried these Matte Balms yet? What colors did you pick up or are you going to pick up if you haven't tried? I'd love to hear what you think about them. :)
