Tom Ford Pussycat Lip Color Matte Review & Swatches

As promised in my October 2014 Favorites post, I have a review of the new Tom Ford lipstick line called Lip Color Matte to share with you today. Holiday is approaching us so fast. I felt like I was just reviewing the new Tom Ford lipsticks for Fall collection yesterday but here we are, another new collection already. I'm not complaining of course since you probably know by now how crazy I am with Tom Ford lipsticks! New formula? Yes, please! :)

The Lip Color Matte line is housed in the same Tom Ford's signature dark brown packaging with gold trimming as the original formula. It also has the same sweet vanilla scent that disappears quickly upon application. There are 8 shades total in the line-up; 2 are limited-edition (First Time and Black Dahlia) and 6 are permanent (Flame, Pink Tease, Plum Lush, Pussycat, Ruby Rush, and Velvet Cherry). Since I didn't know what to expect, I limited myself to purchasing just one shade to test out the formula first.

Pussycat applies true-to-color on my pigmented lips. It is basically a wearable medium mauve pink shade that is so close to my natural lip color that you could say it's a MLBB shade on me. I selected this shade because it's not too pale, too bright, or too dark. In my opinion, it's a middle ground shade that should flatter a lot of skin tones.

Tom Ford's matte formula is so different than anything else I have tried. It doesn't have that thick, drying feel you often experience with the matte formula. Pussycat has the perfect balance of being matte and creamy with a bit of a lustre feel so it glides beautifully across the lips without any tugging or pulling. The color goes on evenly, doesn't settle into lip lines, and appears opaque in one pass. I have tried applying it over my bare lips without a lip balm and was so surprised to see that it didn't emphasize the dry areas at all. Though I will say the finish looks better when worn over a thin layer of lip balm or lip primer.

The pigment is incredibly rich but still feels lightweight during wear. I wouldn't describe the finish as a true matte, though, as it definitely has a bit of soft shine to it. It is certainly more like a “velvet matte” than a flat matte. It seems to plump up my lips just a notch, too, which is always a plus in my book. The best part, however, has to be the longevity. Pussycat just lasts and lasts on my lips! I can easily get 5 full hours of wear with minimal fading and this is without a lip primer!

I am completely satisfied with my purchase. The formula far exceeded all my expectations and has impressed me so much that I am already planning to buy more shades. I'd like to try First Time next but sadly it is out of stock right now. Since it's a LE shade, I'm not optimistic it will be restocked. My next option would be Pink Tease which looks like it could be a nice cool-toned pink that I always have a soft spot for. :) If you have any recommendations, please leave them down below.

Are you planning to pick up the new Tom Ford matte formula? If so, what colors are you looking forward to trying the most?

  • I knew this would looking amazing on you, and it does~ So in love with this formula. My other lipsticks in my stash are feeling lonely.

    • Thanks so much, Wendy! :D I am totally in love with the formula as well. What a GREAT matte! I seriously want to own one of every color!! You’re so lucky to have First Time in your collection! :)

  • Hey Jaa, I looove this one on you! Very very pretty! I heard they won’t be available here till next February or something like that, which is a little insane. I’ll definitely look into them when they are though!

  • I hate you >_<

    *cough*

It's so pretty on you! T_T If there's ever some sort of Nordstrom sale, I will be in deep trouble… This colour is just too awesome. It's exactly the kind of muted, mauvy pink I'm totally into at the moment! I also like that the finish isn't dead matte. You and Tom Ford seem to be waging a campaign on me (and my wallet) ;-) I feel like this is a shade that could work on a lot of skintones, actually. INCLUDING MINE, DAMMIT!

*goes off to bang head against wall* ;-)

    • If you ever decide to splurge, THIS IS IT, Syl!! ;D I doubt Nordstrom will ever have any 20% off sale! That would be too good to be true!

  • Ooh hello Jaa indeed! This looks positively sumptuous! Gorgeous color on you! Damn it, you’re making me really want a TF lip color! But you already have me wanting the UD Vice 3 palette! AHHHH! LOL! 555! ;)

  • I love this color!!! Soo pretty on you, Jaa! And I am glad it’s permanent!!I was eyeing for the Black Dahlia, too, but boooo it’s LE. Keep on posting beautiful photos! xx

    • Thanks, Laarni! Me, too! I’m SO glad the line is permanent! I’m not too interested in Black Dahlia anyway so it doesn’t bother me that it’s LE! :)

  • Pussycat looks so lovely on you. I am wearing it today, on me it is quiet dark, like a medium shade. I have First Time and I don’t think you would like it all that much because it is rather pale abd it wears off easier than Pink Tease and Pussy Cat. But what about Plum Lush, that would look beautiful on you, or that dark red one…

    • Thanks, Sara! That’s what I heard from Wendy, too, about First Time. Still, I really want it! LOL. Plum Lush is also a gorgeous color! Decision decision decision! x_x

  • The shade is really nice but I’m more impressed by the finish! I love a matte like this. It’s the only matte type I can wear! :(

  • I love this on you, Jaa :-) There isn’t a Tom Ford here, but I think there might be a similar shade in the Bobbi Brown creamy matte lip color line up…

  • Such a tempting review Jaa – I’ve been eyeing Velvet Cherry but I may have similar shades. Also, how would you compare this to NARS Audacious? :)

    • Velvet Cherry is nice! Good thing these are permanent so there’s no rush! :)

In my experience, I feel that Nars is slightly creamier and more slippery in texture. It also leaves a bit of a shiny finish, tends to cling on to dry patches, and fades faster than the Tom Ford.

Tom Ford is slightly drier in texture but it still applies smoothly. It leaves a velvety matte finish that just lasts and lasts. Doesn’t emphasize dry spots and I normally don’t feel the need to prep my lips beforehand.

They are both richly pigmented and offer an opaque finish in one pass. Hope this helps! :)

  • GOOOOORGEOUS colour and looks SOOOOO good on you !! Hate when they make these gorgeous and universally flattering shades LE. THats just…evil!!

  • Tom Ford doesn’t disappoint right? Can’t wait to get my hands on one! I would probably go for a more bolder shade, hihi. The formula sounds uber dreamy!

    X Alice

  • This color is absolutely gorgeous!! Pinned it immediately haha. It looks beautiful on you too, girl xx

    • Yay! I have to say Pussycat is my favorite from the range as well! But it doesn’t mean I want to stop at this color, though. Hehe. ;D
