YSL Blush Voluptè Heart Of Light Powder Blush Review & Swatches

YSL Blush Voluptè Heart Of Light Powder Blush is my latest obsession! I purchased it as soon as I published my On My Radar August 2014 post and it took every ounce of me to not write a review right away. I wanted so badly to show you how beautiful this piece of luxury is but I had to use it extensively first to be able to write an honest review. And today I think I'm ready to share my thoughts with you! Warning: if you have a soft spot for luxurious blushes, this post is going to be very dangerous to your wallet! ;D

The YSL Blush Voluptè Heart Of Light Powder Blush comes in a reflective gold square compact with the brand's logo on the front. The compact is made of plastic so it is pretty lightweight but still feels sturdy in hand. Inside you will find a mirror and a small blush brush. The brush bristles are soft, non-scratchy, and will come in handy on the go. I don't find it to be too terrible at applying the blush powder at all. In fact, with a little effort, I have been able to use it to apply the blush on my cheeks with beautiful results! Also included with the compact is a protective black velveteen pouch that opens from the side.

The Blush Voluptè combines two textures of blushes in one beautiful block design. The center part where the YSL logo is has a shimmery finish for a highlighting effect while the outer part has a matte finish for the blush effect.

The color I have is Light 03 (according to Sephora website; everywhere else this shade is referred to as “Parisienne“) which has a medium cool-toned pink with a strong hint of purple in the outer part (my gosh, it's SO beautiful!) and a light peachy pink with flecks of gold shimmer throughout in the center part. The powder has a lovely floral scent that I absolutely adore but it is noticeable only in the first few minutes of application.

It is easier to swirl both parts of the blush together and apply for a natural flush with luminous effect. However, you can use a small tapered blush brush such as the Shu Uemura 20 Brush to selectively pick up just the outer part for a shimmer-free application. Then, if desired, you can follow with a small brush such as MAC 188 or 224 to pick up just the shimmery shade and apply on top of the cheeks. I personally like to apply them together because I prefer my blush to have a hint of luminosity than being completely matte.

The Blush Voluptè powder is incredibly smooth and finely-milled. The outer matte part is creamy, silky, and applies beautifully on the skin without being patchy or chalky. The inner shimmery part does not feel as creamy but at least it doesn't feel gritty during application despite the high shimmer content.

I'd categorize the pigmentation of this blush as “sheer-to-medium“. It goes on really subtle but the intensity can be built with ease. In my opinion, it is practically impossible to overdo the application. It's one of those blushes that you can grab, apply, and go knowing that the end results will always be natural-looking and beautiful. I also really love the soft radiant effect it gives to my complexion whenever I wear it!

Light 03 is considered a “light” shade on my medium complexion so it doesn't stay on my skin as long as my other more pigmented blushes. I'd say about 4-5 hours at most before I notice some fading. However, the longevity depends greatly on how much you apply, your skin type, and whether you apply it on top of powder or foundation and powder (which normally extends the makeup wear time).

I hope you can see that slight hint of luminosity on my cheeks in the photo above! Notice how flattering it looks? I am just completely floored by the performance of this blush! :) On my lips is Tom Ford Aphrodisiac by the way, in case you're wondering! ( this shade!)

There is no doubt in my mind at this point that I'll be picking up more shades of the YSL Blush Voluptè Heart Of Light Powder Blush! In fact, Light 05 is next on my list. It is such a beautiful bright coral that I think will flatter my skin really well. YSL has been coming out with a lot of great makeup lately and I just couldn't be happier. I've always been interested in the line but nothing in the past had really stood out to me. This blush, however, changed everything! Now I'm interested in their powder, lipstick, and also foundation. But one at a time, though, right? ;D

What about you? Do you have a favorite makeup from YSL? Are you looking forward to trying this Blush Voluptè?

  • I COULD justify buying this when I get a $25 gift card for Sephora with my shopkick app lol But uggggh, I need to use that for base makeup instead since I’m running out of foundation. But damn. Beautiful.

    • It is hard to resist for sure! Maybe you can wait till Sephora 20% off? I know I am waiting for the sale to buy more shades! It’s a really beautiful piece, Rikki! :)

  • Omg such luxurious stuff
    Love how lovely you look
Thank god these stuffs reach late in Indian market
So me can save a bit before d big dent

  • Hi Jaa,
I am a little undecided about the new eye shadows of YSL, since they went for this “impossible to overdo” direction, which is great for make-up new-vies but can be a bit boring for people like us (Make-up addicts)
On the other hand though, I never go for statement cheek looks so I almost always tone down my pigmented blushes or never use them when I am in a hurry so YSL blushes seem to be right up my alley.

Thanks so much for these drool-worthy photos and a great review

    • Oh I had no idea the eyeshadow palettes had weak color payoff! They certainly look pigmented in the pan!

I’m with you on the subtle cheek color. I feel very self conscious when I wear bold brushes or when I apply too much. I’m always afraid I’ll look like I have clown cheeks. LOL.

I’m checking out your review of the Givenchy palette as we speak! ;D

  • OK, don’t even get me started on YSL. Because I’m gonna have to direct you to their powder foundation, their mascara, their BB cream… I have a little bit of a thing with YSL, which is hilarious since I didn’t even realise they had a makeup line until a couple of years ago! The powder foundation is an Asia exclusive, but you must have some innocent, unsuspecting contacts in Thailand you can hit up, right? :-D

As you can see, I’m avoiding talking about the blush, because if I talk about it I’m going to want it. So that’s why I’m not talking about it. The blush, I mean. The one that shall not be named. By me. Here, in this comments section. About a blush.

    Oh Gods >____<

    • Haha I know you’re a big YSL makeup fan! I still remember your glowing review of the BB Crème!! ;D Powder foundation you say? I may have to email my Thai friend to pick it up for me!

Nah, let’s not talk about THE BLUSH. Let’s not do it. Let’s totally talk about something else besides THE BLUSH. Because there is no sense in talking about it, you know, about THE BLUSH.

      HAHAHAHAHAHA! ;D (((((((((SYL))))))))))

    • Cool-toned pinks don’t usually look good on my complexion, either, but I have to make an exception for this one! I still think it’s worth a try/swatch, Michelle! :)

  • I love the blush and the lip. I like how even though it’s a cool blush it’s wearable by warm skin tones. I need to increase my blush stash :(

    • Exactly, Erin! Though it’s a cool shade, it’s still very wearable on me! :) Careful about getting into blushes! ‘Cos once you start, it’s impossible to stop!!! ;D

  • I saw these today and sort of did the jumpy claps. SO MUCH EXCITE. Your pictures are amazing because the testers I saw weren’t anywhere near that beautiful, lol! I saw that they were on the light side but kind of ethereal and glowy, so I’m pretty sure that I’ll love them at some point. Just not right now, because I’m definitely feeling a blush overload and have to get rid of at least 5 lesser ones to make room for one of these guys.

    • LOL I can imagine the excitement!!! Etheral and glowy is the perfect description of these blushes! Hope you’ll get to try them soon!

  • Hi Jaa, you were not lying about the warning. It is too pretty to resist. Your photo is so high quality. I went to YSL website to have a look what other colour selection they have. Seriously your photos look way better than the official website’s. Maybe they can consider hiring you to do the job next time?

I love this colour on you. I like coral colours but pink colours actually looks better on me. I am going to my local YSL counter to check it out very soon x

    • LOL thanks, Grace! ^_^ I hope they see your comment and consider hiring me! Haha. One can dream, right? ;D

Yeah, please check it out! I’d love to know what you think about it! :)

  • This is an utter beaut!! WOW. I love it. My fave YSL product right now is the Matt + Radiant pressed powder that I’ve hit pan on. It’s SO good for oily skin b/c it’s not super matte, there is some life to the skin, but it’s great for oil control. I would repurchase it in a heartbeat (if I didn’t have 56 other powders to use first, LOL!!)! I much prefer a subtle blush that I can build versus one I have to use with caution.

  • YSL is not available here so I never really got to try many of their products. Of course, there’s online purchasing, but nothing beats trying them at the counter eh? This blush looks beautiful on you and not the slightest bit too light :-)

    • I love the instant gratification of shopping offline! It’s like you get to see the product right there and right then! I only buy things online only when I know I’ll absolutely love the product or when the store has good return policy. Of course, awesome deluxe samples help, too! ;D

Thanks, Lily! I love how easy it is to wear this blush!

  • WOW – this blush looks absolutely amazing, and your photos are crazy intense good! o__o I am definitely in awe. The photos themselves sold me, LOL.

  • Hi Jaa! I would never have picked up such a cool-toned pink as a blush but I must admit that you look awesome with it! Maybe I should plan a trip to my local counter to have a swatch, swatch.

    X Alice

    • Hey Alice! Thanks! For some reason I think cool-toned pink blushes compliment my complexion really well. Hope you get to try it in person soon! You might just fall in love with it, too!

  • Oh my god, is that ever pretty. I have way too many blushes like this one already (and ones with better wear times, to boot), but WOW — you make this one look way too good.
