Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Vernis à Lèvres Plump Up Glossy Stain Review & Swatches

To these days whenever I have to be out for long hours, YSL Glossy Stain is still the lip product of choice when I want long-lasting lip color and high shine on my lips. I've long been wishing for the brand to release a “clear” version of the product so that I can pair it with my own lip color and guess what, they finally did! To say that I'm super happy is an understatement. I'm ecstatic! A high-impact gloss that lasts all day, it finally exists!

YSL Vernis à Lèvres Plump Up Glossy Stain is part of the Pop Water Collection for Spring and Summer 2015 (currently Nordstrom-exclusive). The shade is called Plump Up (200) because it promises to give your lips an “instant push-up effect” as well as lasting shine, thanks to the hyaluronic acid-infused formula. It has a subtle signature YSL lip product scent (slightly fruity, slightly rose-y) that lingers for a good 5-10 minutes. The scent is much more subtle than that of the regular Glossy Stain in my opinion.

The Plump Up version features a similar packaging to the original Glossy Stain except it has a silver cap and a black-on-gold YSL logo instead (the original one has a gold cap and a red-on-gold logo). The clear windows are located on both sides and the shade name and number are at the bottom.

I'll say that the flattened, pointed tip applicator is excellent for both applying and filling the product along the contour of the lips but it seems to pick up very little product at a time. I often find myself dipping the wand back into the tube several times before I have enough gloss to cover my lips. At least it feels so soft and cushiony, so I really don't mind the reapplication!

Plump Up looks slightly pale pink in the tube but swatches clear on the lips. I notice some pinkish-brown shimmer in the formula that becomes unnoticeable once applied. It has a semi-watery, gel-like texture that glides on with a plush feel initially but soon sets to a slightly tacky, non-drying finish. It is layerable but I'd keep it to just a few layers to prevent goopiness.

The formula does not feel thick like most lip glosses at all. It is so immensely hydrating as I have worn it for more than 9 hours on multiple occasions (cold and windy climate included) and not once did my lips feel dry or tight. The intense glossy shine adheres so well on the lips and lasts approximately 4-5 hours on me and while it does wear off eventually, it still leaves a considerable amount of shine on my lips until I remove it. Let's just say at the end of work day, my lips still look pretty glossy! :)

As you can see in my lip swatch above, the smoothing, lip-plumping effect is clear as day! And I'm happy to report that the effect is gentle; there's no burning or strong tingling sensation typically associated with most lip plumpers. You can wear it alone for a fresh-faced, glossy lip look or pair it with a lip liner or lipstick of your choice; either way, Plump Up will leave your lips looking smooth and plump for hours to come. :)

I seriously hope that YSL will make this permanent or I'll have to stock up soon!

  • Great to hear that it is gentle yet effective! I didn’t know it contains softer shimmer like that. So pretty!
I want to get the peach shades from the Pop Water range (or should I just go for something from the core line cause I want an orange).

  • Hey, this kinda reminds me of Dior Lip Maximizer! My tube is almost empty, but that’s because I use it at night sometimes and I slather quite a bit on. I haven’t paid attention to this at all, but now you’ve got me intrigued!

      • Hey Jaa, nope it’s not sticky and it is plumping! After a while I don’t notice the plumping that much tho. I don’t specifically look for plumping lip balms but if you are, the Omorovicza lip balm is great!

        • Thanks for the rec, Sunny! Good to know the Dior one is not sticky and plumping! I love me super plump lips! Hehe <3

  • OMG your photos. I know I keep saying that but they are SO GORGEOUS.

I really like the look of this but I’m really sensitive to the YSL lip product scent so I can’t pick this up :( I’m surprised that this colour is a limited edition though, it seems like something that’d be permanent since it’s such a classic.

    • I’m hoping it will be made permanent! And thanks so much! I love hearing it so I don’t mind at all if you’re going to say it everyday and many times a day. Haha <3

  • This sounds really good. I’ve actually never tried these glossy stains because I’m not the biggest fan of high shine on my lips, however, I can’t deny you make it sound like a must-have, lol!

    • Certain people love it but I’ve heard some people who can’t stand the “tight” feeling these Glossy Stains seem to have on lips. The Plump Up one doesn’t feel tight at all, though, at least not on me. :)

  • I like the sound of it! I love clear glosses that can be layered over a lisptick! And that subtle shimmer looks just beautiful!

    • Too bad the shimmer does not translate on lips! I love clear glosses for layering as well! I’m so glad YSL makes one now with the Glossy Stain formula. :)

  • Ooh, this sounds totally lovely! Makes your lips look so full and luscious and good to hear the plumping effect is gentle and comfortable :)

  • How well does it layer? I’d want to put it over a lip pencil like either NARS forumla or Revlon Balm Stain blotted down.

    • It layers so well over anything, Erin! I’ve tried it over my new Marc Jacobs lip liner and the result is a nude-gorgeous! :)

  • Love the pictures you took! And the result is looking nice on you. Personally not that much of a fan of glossy stuff. My lips can’t handle it ^^

Keeping my fingers crossed for you that they ‘ll be keeping it in their assortiment ;)

    • I totally understand! Some people just cannot handle the tight feeling/film associated with regular Glossy Stains. But this Plump Up one feels totally different! It feels more like a gloss. Not as tight as the other Glossy Stains and I don’t feel like there’s a film on my lips. It’s a Glossy Stain that’s not a Glossy Stain. Hehe

  • Looks pretty! And good to hear it continues to ‘gloss’ so well (glossing is a verb now, deal with it). The only thing I’m a bit worried about is what exactly causes the plumping effect. When plumping equals irritating it’s not good news.

    • Hey I support the gloss-verb thing! ;D I don’t mind gentle lip plumpers but I can’t stand those Marvelous Moxie Lipglosses at all! Too strong of a tingling/burning sensation! My guess is they probably put too much of whatever stuff that increases blood flow to the lips in the formula. :-/

  • I’m so considering this as I, too, love the YSL Glossy Stains. Have you tried it over a regular lipstick yet? Does it give the same effect this way as when you’re wearing an actual Glossy Stain? xo

    • LOL it’s funny how one views something as just a plain clear gloss and here I am feeling like it’s the best clear gloss in the world and is so worth the price tag. I suppose I just really love how long-lasting it is as I find most clear glosses wear off within a couple of hours. :)
